What strikes one most about this angle, 1s the comfort and noier which the engineer rn.1 iris train, and the ease with so many tons of machinery can rated from the luxurious thel- a protected and cushioned gab. comotive engineer ti not a sue but a human being, his cab is e extent his home, and up to- ilets railway managements are recog- nadag this by provldtag him wltb t quarters. There is ao doubt Dai policy In Una, for the less 41s- ttnrbed be 1s by weather, or other physics rendition& the more care he elan devote to the locomotive and the train itself. , Under the severe eft matte eoaditlose which sometimes psavall in the mountain divisions, this naturally conduces to safety, and so lier es the locomotive engineer Ii eoncern.d safety First and (comfort P'lrst go hand in hand. The Interior of the cab, wbtrh its roomy and well ventilated, has spring arahionse .eats which can be moved ern a dies. while the sliding arm -rest es the window is also comfortably eoshlooed. A coat cnpboard with we'fegmeg pegs takes care of the sur- plus urplus cietbtng. The windows are doable masked with storm windows for twister and are constructed with email prig►—a great advantage, as they are more easily and quickly re- placed and occasion le.. discomfort If broken. A wind deflector enables lifts engineer to see the track without hurting kb eyes, while a wind de- limiter on the roof of the cab stops the beak drattglit and keeps the cab tree from dust The cab itself bee Amble ventilators and 1a pieasentty warned In winter through having the insulation on the boiler bead mode la panels which can he easily leNsd out. A great improvement Is the power reverse gear worked by air, as easy to work as the beadle of a peering machine, willyd ellmlaates the o heavy hand lever and reduces the physical drain upon the engineer. So far as the exterior of the loco• motive 1■ concerned, this has bees designed so that repairs can be made without the men having frequently to go Inside er under the engine. One of the old worries of the engine crew Is removed by a new t'pg of alp strainer, drawing cool air Into the pump which requires little er no se - Motion. A noticeable feature of the exterior 1■ the laird crosshead. an old type revived because It ensures such excellent lubrication and Is easy to malntalo. A ealety strap 1s ap- plied to the guide bar to prevent It from dropping. The guide Is self - centering and maintains alignment better than the ordinary guide, while the leading driving wheel ti aeztble with one Inch extra sldeplay and la provided with wedge play to ensure proper guiding. The engine truck Is provided with side resistance pro- cured recured by a sliding iDe lned plane, and here again the safety of the too Wooer 1s oousldered ID the safety clamp which prevents the tank trema sliding forward on to the cab In case et coltlatoa.
