Patrick Sullivan, of Mount Carmel,
received word last week that his eon,
Pte. Joseph Sullivan, had been killed
in action. Pier Sullivan had previously
been reported wounded.
Job Cooper, en old resident of Stan-
ley township, d'ed suddenly on the 7th
Inst. In his sixty-fifth year. On May
21st his wife died alter a short illness
and it was • great *bock to him.
The floe 100 -acre farm of Jae. Nie-
holeon, near Sunshine, has been pur-
chased by W heeler. B roc of the same
locality. Mr. Nicholson will take chi e
reason's crop alt and talks of locating
in Wingbam.
Mr, and Mrs. W. H. Bell, of "Fair-
view Farm," Hallett township, an-
nounce the engagement of their
daughter, Annie, to Howard Hill, Poo
of G, W. Hill, of Taber, Alta. The
marriage takes place this month.
The death occurred on the lltt'b inst.
of an old and highly respected reei•
dent of Lothian and one of the earliest
residents of Ashfield township in the
person of Mrs. Wm. Houten, in bey
seventy-third year. She leaves six
sons and awe daughters.
The house of refuge committee of
the county council met at the house of
refuge at Clinton on Thursday last and
investigated certain matters regarding
which there had been complaint. The
committee gave instructions which it
is beli3ved will meet the needs of the
situation.
A pretty wedding tok place at the
home of John 111cBurney, 8th conces-
sion of Turnberrv, on June 13th, when
hie second daughter, Mise Cbarlotte
J., became the bride of Bertram Mar-
tin, of %Vinghem. The ceremony was
performed by Rev. Mr. Malcolm, of
Wroxeter.
One of the prettiest of June wed-
dings took place at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Casetnore, Howick, on
June 8th, when their youngest daugb-
er, Annie, was united in marriage to
Oliver Galloway, The young couple
will make their home on the 15th con-
cession of Howick.
Wm. Chesney, well known in the
township of Tuckeremith, died at his
one on ooncession V recently at the
age of sixty-nine yerae. He was a cent-
ral figure in municipal affairs for many
years and at the time of his death
was township assessor. His wife, two
sons and one daughter survive.
Miss Violet Neil, of Stephen, is the
second in that locality to be fortunate
in winning an automobile tbrottgb a
guessing contest ronducred by a Tor-
onto magazine. Miss Neil received
word recently that she was the win-
ner of a Ford per and that it would be
forwarded to her In the course of a
week or so. Archie Hicks, of Centralia
was the lucky winner of an Oval lend
car a few weeks ago.

While returning from Stratford
Mb his daughter recently Andrew
rchibald, of Tuckeramith, had the
misfortune to meet with a rather seri-
ous accident. The car which he was
driving skidded on the wet, greasy
road and landed in the ditch, break-
ing the windshield, flying glass from
which cut his arm so severely that
eleven stitches were re -mired to diose
th• wound. Miss Archibald was not
injured.
An unfortunate accident occurred
one day recently at the farm of Wm.
Pincombe, in Ushorne, when Paul
Coates and R. D. Hunter, of Elim-
ville, fell from • beam over twenty
feet to the ground during the raising
of an addition to Mr. Pincomhe's
barn. Both mem received a severe
sbaking-up end it was thought for a
time that Mr. Coates was In a ver
critical condition, but luckily both
escaped withodt any broken bones and
are getting along nicely. The accident
happened while the plate was being
put in position. Something gave way,
overbalancing one of the men, who
fell egainet the, other, and both were
precipited to the ground.
