CANNOT UNDERSTAND COUNCIL'S
ACTION.
To the Editor of The Signal.
URAR SIR, -I notice with regret,
but not surprise, that one county
council has again, for the many'th
time, turned down the application for
a district representative of the Depart-
ment of Agriculture.
I understand that it is the farmer
members who voted agsinet the meas-
ure. it is difficult to determine the
reason why the Very men who will re-
ceive the most benefit from such an
appointment should be opposed to it.
The opposition May be due to a failure
to understand the w3rk of these .men.
In view of the fact that there era so
many representatives of the Depart-
ment of Agriculture in Ontario who
are doing good work for the farming
interests, this apathy ar.d opposition
towards the pleasure is decidedly in-
ezculeable.
•.The Ontario Government is re-
spo'nsihle for the introduction 61 the
district representative Into the agri-
cultural life of North America. The
Ides hes worked so well in Ontario
that many of the Staten of the Union
have adopted the idea in their
"county agents." At'present there
lire 1,278 men en agricultural agents
throughout the United States. - Since
declaring war, the Federal Govern-
ment has commenced plans to in-
crease thin staff td 3,000 men. In ad-
dition to these, they have 478 women
county agents and propose to bring
this number up to 2,000.
Surely, surely, these agents, the
district representatives, must be of
some sssietance to the community.
The personal experience of thousands
of Onlay io farmers is th.t the district
representative of the Dep.rttuent of
Agriculture is of real material assist-
ance to them. Very truly.
