in Scotland, I feel sure that every one of 3'ou who fully realizes
the . existing conditions would not hesitate a moment in
grasping the present opportunity to go overseas. -
I ant not going to beg you to enlist, -that 'is for your
own conscience, and your own judgment under your existing
circumstances, a question you must answer for yourself, -but
I wish to say that the present is in my opinion very nearly
the last opportunity you will have to do so. No such a fray
a'it1 be witnessed during the lifetime of the present generation.
This is a contest between the Hun and the Angie -Saxon- :
between right ,and wrong, between decency and 'indecency,
between fair play and foul play, between men who fight
square and those who do not, lighting man against plan and
an enemy which murders*Oaten and children on the land anti
on the sea. X.
Before the British Empire •was the Huns under Attila
swept away the Roman nation, the greatest nation in the
world at that time. Shall this occur again ? John Bull and
his sons have stripped for the fight. Will you 'able-bodied
young men of Huron, sons of sires who feared nothing in
their conquest of the new world and who were always able to
do their share, stand back and let yo'1r kinsman ask for assist-
ance in wain ? -
This fight, the greatest the world has ever seen, is in the
last round. Now is the thne to put your s ulder to the
wheel. Opportunity kpocks at a man's door oy once, and
iN now beckoning to you in the Artillery. The casualties,
considering the large number engaged, are very few, not
more..than double the regular rate would be in normal times.
The young man who is able to do his share, and does not
offer to -,4o so. will only regret it once --and that will be for
the rest of his (lays.
This is a matter between you and your own conscience ---
don't let anyone else decide it for ymt. •
To the Girls of Huron:
Every one of you can hep either by advising your male
M'ends to enlist, or by helping to do their work while they
Ire away fighting for you. A young man who IN ill not fight
or you is not worthy of your respect, let alone frieudship.
