The taking of the census followed
only upoc. the discovery that the men
were not stirred. It was 11111111. taken
for granted that the new Natation
would be completed hy the end of Feb-
ruary. Recruiting for it began in 1
mid-I)eceenbei. Hy the end of Jan -1
nary it was realized that a tremendous
.Rolf would be required t, complete
the unit. Dr. James L. Hughes,
Judge Barron, and • number of re-
turned soldiers toured the county. Bet
WO many meting• had to be held to
cover the county that it amounted to
more expense and time than the vol-
untary recruiters could wattage un -
sided.
For it must be remembered that. the
Government will not bear a cent of
Ode expense. A man in the village
of Auburn, a L•w miles out of (lode -
Jae signified hie willingness to enlist
if the miht•.ry authorities would call
for him. But. the military men were
unable to .pend a cent to hs ing him

Clinton has been stripped of its
youth. Flight nide' away. Meaforth,
with nearly the same population, can
boast of only one-fifth as many re-
cruits as Clinton. Brussels and
Wingham have given their boys gen-
erously. Hut mile after mile of farms
still hold out against every appeal.
Perhaps the nation requires them to
stay borne. If wo. the nation, through
the Government, should say so.
One eoncomion made to the farm-
ers by Col. (:umbo is that at seeding
time the soldiers stationed through-
out the county will bre available for
biro to the farmers for a period of
thirty days. And if still in the
country at harvest time, they can
legate be hired for too days to help
