EVENING CLASSES!
The 'Board of Trustees of the Goderich Collegiate in-
stitute has decided to re -open the evening classes on
Monday, the 13M of September. 1915.
The following will be the subjects
1. Woodworking and Mechanical Drawing
2. Cooking 3. Dressmaking
4. Millinery
Three evenings per week will be devoted to each subject.
Competent teachers for the different subjects have been
engaged.
A fee of $1.00 per term payable in advance will be charged.
As these classes did such good work and were so successful
last teras, it is hoped that during the coming term all who
are able will take advantage of attending the courses in the
above subjects.

UNEXPEOTED.
Well-known Apple Ower and Striking
Figure in Municipal Life of Gods -
rich Passes Away •After an Opera-
tion in Ilamilton Hospital.
The town was defiled so Saturday
by the totally unespeleted Dews of Use
death of Breve Robert Elliott, which

To the people of Ooderich Mr.

oonn.ction with municipal affairs.
During the last ten years he had hero
in the council for •arious terms, as
councillor, deputy reeve or reeve.
Since January, 1914. until the time of
his death he had eat continuously a1
the ixoard wa reeve. Fie took an inde-
pendent course at the council, showed
the courage of his convictions, and had
a following among the electors which
carried him suceesstully through several
strenuous campaigns.
Mr. $Ilion was married in Isla to
Margaret Cox, the eldest daughter of
the late John Cox, of Goderich town-
ship, who survives him. with a family
of one son, Reginald R.. at home. and
l bre. daughter+ ; Mrs. Richey Burke.

The deceased was the last surviving
member of the family of the 'Ate
James Elliott. He ws•Astaunch Con-
setvat ive, and in religious faith was a

Marrabeee, the Chosen Friends mod
the Woodmen.
The funeral took place no Tuesday
afternoon from the 'slimly residence.

Hayfield and other outlying points

day to abower a charge of keeping

On Monday the proprietor c f the
Bedford hotel appeared for sentence,
but the magistrate reserved his deci-
sion for one week more oo the plea of
Mr. L E. Daccey, who appeared fur
the defendant, that there being an ele-
ment of doubt in the eau the magis-
trate was within his rights in making
31 a tint effrnce. Clown Attorney
Seager aid it was his intention to
take wench after trench in the war-
fare against the sale uf liquor, and if
people persisted in breaking the law
they must bear the eunsrquence.
A local man appeared before the
magistrate at !icon the same day and
pleaded guilty on a charge of bring
drunk in a public place. He was as-
sessed the usual flail) and costs.
In the afternoon the case against
Robert King, proprietor of the Salta
HAWN., Godertcb, was heard. Flom
the evidence it appeared that about
7.13 o'clock on the morning of July

Wallis,
artued with a search warrent,
paid a visit to the hotel of which Mr.
King is proprietor. They found the
bar locked and Mr . King in his garden.
He made no objection to a stench be-
ing made and opened up the house for
the put pose. Ail the liquor confiscated
was a bottle of beer about three-
fourths full and another bottle which
lbs coosiebles'claimed had been served
to a customer during tbeirpresence in
the house but which Mr. King claims
they took from a casco( empties which
may bare been there some time. The
contents of the bottle that was partial-
ly full were analyzed by the Govern-
ment analyst, whose certificate
showed that it contained 7.99 per cent
proof spirits. it appears that at the
time of the seizure neither of the con-
stables bad a 'Oovernwent seal with
bini to seal the bottles and they were
in Constable Pellow's po.eessiun two
days before being handed over to the
expteta company for shipment to Tor-

Mr A. R. Bonham, of Toronto, bad a

water. After about fifteen minutes'
delay the examination was resutned.
The magistrate reserved his decision-
The charge against N. Lanolin, pro-
prietor of the Union hotel. which was
beard Monday evening, arose nut of A
seizure of liquor made on the same
day as that in the King case.' A keg
and a quart bottle of beer were taken
in this instance and left at the police
magistrate's office, a sample b ing
afterwards sent to the Government
analyst, whose report certified it to
C001.110 3.19 per cent. proof spirits.
Mr. Lannan called the brewer who
supplied the liquor and the brewery
analyst. who said the liquor supplied
to Mr. Lannon contained less than
two and one-half per cent. alcohol.
The magistrate reserved his decision
in this Lase also.

The casualty list on Thurday last
contained the name of John Blain,
/ "died of wounds." This is a cousin of
Mr. J. B. McKay. of town. He was
with the 3rd Battalion.

Ontario for overseas service and the
counties of Huron and Bruce ars ex-
pected to furnish a company of 250
men for the 71st Thee company will
be under the command of Capt. H. C.
Dunlop. of tlodrncb, as major. Re-

quarters throughout the two counties,
and the battalion will aaernlble at
London for training.
That 71st will be under the command
of Lt. -Col. Sutherland, who was in
service in France with ibe first l'aoa-
dian contingent and retutned to Can-

wutioded in France. Major Delamere

It will thus he seen that the new
battalion will he in good hands and it
it hoped to make of it a crack colpo.
Capt. Dunlop is ready to receive re-

Lieutenant G. R. Elliott left Calgary
last week in comusand-of thirty young
men from that city to tram in • cyclist
corps at Niagara -en -the -Dake. arriving

Lucknow Boy a Hero.
Woodstock, Aug :A). -Another
Woodstock boy, in the person of Pte
Warren Hildred, son of Mr. and Mrs.
T. W. Hildred of this city, and a mem-
ber of the first Canadian contingent,
his again distinguished himself by his
bravery in rescuing a small boy who
had fallen into the tide race at Hay -
ling Island, England. and who was in
great peril of being drowned.
Pte. Hildred, wbo enlisted et Win-
nipeg with the Princess Patricia, was
conveleecing from wounds received in
France, and when he saw the youth's
danger he plunged into the river,
clothes and .11, and after a hard
struggle succeeded in getting the ioy
ashore, according to dispatches.
The hero of tires incident enlisted
with his brother, of whuni there has
been no word for month.. In a recent
letter borne, Pte. Warren slated that
he was convalescing at Langstone
Tower., where there is a home fur
wounded British soldier. He lost an
eye while in action in France eatly
