THE NAVIGATION SEASON WILL SOON OPEN.
The Ivey reason of navigation nn the Great Lakes will town commence. At Underie+ harhnr most of
the steamers that have wintered here are being refitted for the season's work. and it will not he long be-
fore .ome of them will get away. The picture •hove shows the harbor with its winter fleet, sonde of the
boats tied up in front of the grain elevators and Weetern Canada flour mill. and ethers Tying at the not t
side of Or harbor. The fleet comprises fifteen large freighters -the Turret Cape. Turret L town. Scottish

It u only in recent aures that we. as Canadians. ate coming to realize
the possibilities of becomiog a great nation as • coustrtuent pat t of the great-
est Empire that the world has ever seen. We have been .ung of our
vast extent of territory and our great wealth, especially in the direction
of our immense natural resources, but these only suggest the real oppor-
tunities of developtuent that lie before us.
One of our most important concerns is to lift our political status to a
higher level. We are too apt to look at the great public questions of the
day front a narrow partisan standpoint, instead of considering them on
their merits. Our atracbwent to parties is. to a very large extent, affected
by cousideratious of heredity and euviroowent, and there is apt to be lees
of real ptiueiple and conviction in it than we iwagioe. During the past
few months while the war bas been in progreee we have had lees political
bickering thin usual. both in and out of Parliament, and this, to many of
us, bits seemed w afford a certain relief. Theie is a tendency, however.
through the influence of Canadian Clubs and other organizations, to the
development of • greater independence in our attitude to public questions.
This will noun demand the more serious consideration of our political
leaders, and will doubtless do something to lessen the corruption which we
often deplore.
We have • great opportunity alierin the cotumetclal realm. Now that
the leading place taken by Germany is lost, for a time at least, there in a
great chalice for us to step into the breech. The puieha.e of "made -in -
Canada" goods should be encouraged, but no attempt must be made to
take any undue advantage of this. The article* must be of the highest
worth. must be reasonable in price, and must be well advertised.
The matter of business ethics is also of the highest importance. The
idea that • husioese man cannot be conspicuously successful and at the
same time be thoroughly honest u very prevalent. The following quota-
tions represent the opinion of several authors who have recently written
books that ate being widely read: "Bushiest' Is now intrinsically evil."
"There is no such thing es an ethical bargain." "There ate no honest
to buy or sell." "Every .ucceesful man is an extortioner." "The
business man who is not willing to be • wolf cannot remain in his busi-
ness." But these charges are met by Professor Peabody of Harvard Uni-
versity in the following terms: 'The vast majority of transactions in
modern !wetness are made on credit. If it were not the general practice of
business men w tell the truth and keep their contracts the entire fabric of
modern trade would crumble In • night. Erten in that centre of popular .
reproach, the stock market. negotiations involving great strove of money
are ratified by a word or sign. In short, the foundation of modern busi-
ness is business h000r. For one man who succeeds in business by luck or
fraud a thousand owe their etandiog in the business world to integrity and
incorruptibility." Canadians have a good opportunity of laying emphasis
on these highest ideals. Young men from this country are in great favor
with United States employers because of the reputation they have gained
for honesty. requiring our earnest attention is that of our social wel-
fare. It will pay us to do all we can to avoid the slum conditions which
bare proved so disastrous in the large cities of other countries, before these
areas have developed to any considerable extent. We have also the race
question, and the problem of immigration. In recent year. those who have
been i from other shores in proportion to our population bees been
far more gimerous than the United States ever experienced. It is said
that, already tete Bible is sold in Canada to over one hundred leagues...

own Western Oukario University at London we are just nowt vigorously

the faculties and improvement of the library, laboratory equipment., etc.
The addition of up-to-date apparatus to the medicnl lahorawries pub us
in the way of favorable comparison with other medical Reboots, as lar aa
the essential requirements are concerned. Several crew ecbulasvhips have
been established, and otheri will be welcomed. Our alto is to be in all re-
specte in the front tank.
From these considerations it is evident that we ought to look at all
these political, commercial and social quest ions from the bro de.t poedble
view. Our interest@ are clo.ely bound up with one another. The welfare
of one person or community is favorable to the success of others, while the
misfortune of one tends to the digester of other'. It is important. too,
that we emphasize in our naliot.al AKair.tbe wait ion of right.eousnees and
justice. Our hope for suocers io the present war is re much based on the
justice of our cause as upon the strength of our slimy and navy.
Whatever may be our prospect of • rapidly increasing population
rivalling that of much older countries, and whatever wry be the likelihood
of our developing captains of finance, whose fortunes .hall be equal to
those of • Rockefeller, a Carnegie or & Rothschild, it w at least within our
power to reach • place of great eminence in these otter matters, if we ate
willing to meet the conditions. Moreover. there is no more important
avenue through which we can work for these high ideals than the Cana-
dian Clubs, which are fire :nom political hia+r, untrammelled hy eectarisn
prejudice, and united on the broadest pos.ihle pi inciplee of progress, free-
dom and brotherhood.
