THREE BATFLESHIPS
TI•.gleg Mines In Dardanelles Sank
lereefietabls. Ocean and French
Rattsahlp 'Bouvet
Ilse Admiralty announced VTtdsy
that the Britlell battleships Ocean and
Irresdstatie and the Preach battleship
Bower struck drifting mines in the
Dardanelles and were sunk. Most of
tis Rhea on the Bouvet were lost, but
nearly all the crews of the Urltlah
warships were saved.
This la the most serious loss sus-
tained by t1 • Anglo -Trench fleet under
Tim -Admiral Carden, which has been
bombarding the straits. The three
skips went down during a furious
aaaage -.ding Inside the straits. just
ewtslle the Narrows, In which 16
battleships participated in relays. The
bis Brttl.t battle cruiser Inflextble
and the Trench battleship Oaulols
ware put out of commission temporar-
y by hooky •'•oto from the Turkish
forts.
The vessels deltroyed will not. It
L stated by the Admiralty omcials,
taserfere with the Dardanelles oper-
atloes in the •lightest. The lost ships
w111 be replaced and the attack on
all torts will be carried on until the
strait is passed. Naval experts say
that both France and Great Britain
expected to pay a big :•rice tor the
possession of Constantinople, and that
the general scheme discounts even
greater losses than those announced.
Three fresh battleships are on their
way to the Dardanelles to till the
vacancies left by the lot. of the
Irresistible,• Ocean and Gaulols.
The mines in the Dardanelles have)
proved a rnurh greater nt. race to the
allied fleet than the num• rous torts.
and naval authorities hate predicted
that as soon as the •trail was clear d
of that danger, the passage would
sad bare been engaged night and day
la sweeping the channels dear. At
ase time the Mak wee almost com-
pl.tel, but recently the Germans and
'Turks have adop .d the plan of
launching floating mlass, which come
tow■ against the ships with tremen
doss force, swept at lbs rate of nearly
tan miles an hour by the strong cur-
rant from the Sea of Marmots.
The boas of the three battleships
is not a serious blow to the British
sad Freud navies. The lost ships
were all old, the Bouvet having been
laid down a score of years ago, and
the British vessels being about fifteen
years old.
The damage dose to the Turkish
torte by the heavy bombardment has'
not been ascertained. It Is staled
that the operations against them are
ooetlnuing.
Vice -Admiral Carden, who has (leen
incapacitated by illness, has been
succeeded in the chief con, ruand by
Rear -Admiral John Michael De Roberti,
with the acting rank of Vice-Admlra
