STEINBACH TAKEN
BY FRENCH TROOPS
Fierce Fighting of Mouse to Howe
Cfparacter Was Feature of
the Struggle
The French troops la Upper Alsace
fought their way oo Monday through
the half of Stetab.ch that was at111
held by the Germans, drove the enemy
In confusion from the village, and
swept uu until they had recaptured
the Oermau defensive positions Just
west of Cernay Fiery foot of ground
was so bitterly contested that the the
losses were extraordinarily se% ere.
A separate battle raged about each
house and for several hours the ad-
vantage rested with ale side and then
with the other.
The extremely rainy winter, the
wont Europe has experienced In yenrx,
causing floods In the river valleys of
the continent as well as those of Eng-
land, has prevented any cperallons bn
a large scale on 'he western belt, -
front and has seriously lcterftred with
those In the east.
1n Alsace the French are so ^I,;e
to Altklrch that they bombarded a
railway train In the stat.o' ct Vat
town. French guns have- al•o .:'-etroy-
ed the railway between Hira. a 5 and
Jiarzpach, southwest of Altk:rch.
The capture of this line o ot:!d give
the French a great advantage In their
operations In upper Alsace, as it would
virtually cut the Germane cT front the
entire region south of a Zine between
Altklrchand Basel in S,;:;c.rland.
