gian relief fund reached considerable
proportions at McGaw on Monday.
An immense quantity of grain. apples
and potatoes were contributed toward
a worthy cause.
Rev. and Mrs. RoPpie have the heart-
felt vympatby of the entire commun-
ity in the loos of their infant daughter
last week. The funeral service was
held on Friday afternoon, the remains
being taken to Tweed for interment.

committee, Messrs. A. 0. Sutherland,

Peter Kerr. to the nuwher of about
50, descended ou their peaoeful home
on the 6th concwion and taking for-

dress and two handsome parlor tables.
The outdrew was read by Mr. Adam
Hick -on and the presentations were
mate by Mr-. W. Kerr and Mr. M.
Mordie. Mr. Kerr on behaltof himself
and Mrs. Keri made • suittblr and
feeling reply. At the conclusion of
these formal proceedings the tables
were bo'urtifully spread by the Tint-
ing ladies sod all enjoyed an excellent
report. Rev. 0. C'arewell was called
to the chair and au impromptu mturi-
eal and literary programme was given
which. with social converse, rounded
off a mostenjoyahle evening. Mr. and
Mrs. Kerr have resided in this neigh-
borhood all their lives and having
disposed of their Carus and being about
to remove to Seaforth, their neighbors
took this method of expressing the
esteem in which they are held and of
enjoying with theme a pleasaut social
evening before their removal. They
hare since taken possession of there
new noun in Meaforth, and it is need-
less to sat that the good wishes of all
the friends around the old home and
wherever they are kogwn go with
them.
After a brief illness Mn. Thomas
Heffernan. of Detroit, succumbed to a
severe Attack of preuutuoia on Tues-
day morning, October 16th. Mrs.
Heffernan. who was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. James Matthews, of Mc-
Killop, went to Detroit seven years
ego. Owing to her kindness and lov-
able diapoeitioo. she won many friends
and was highly respected by all who
came in contact with her. Requiem
and high was. war celebeated by
Father Burke at St. Peter and St.
Paul's Jesuit church at nine a.m. Fri-
day. the 16th. and deceased was laid
to real at Mount Olivet cemetery. Be-
sides ber husband end two bright 1it-
tis girls, -Marie, twelve, and Leona six
ears, respectively, she is survived by
her mother, two brothers aid flee sis-
ters Among those who accompanied
the remains to their last resting place
were Mr. Thomas Heffernan. hus-
band ; Marie and Leona Heffernan,
daughters of deceased : Mrs. Jsmes
Matthews. mother of deceased ; Sis-
ter M. Isadore, Sister Joseph, Sister
Agnes and Sister Ursla, belonging to
the Order of St. Joseph's the former a
sister of the deceased ; Mr. and Mrs
J. Reid. of Midland, Michigan ; Mr.
and Mrs. George LaCrete, Detroit ;
Mr. and Mn. J. Matthews, Mrs. Wm.
Heffernan, Joseph Heffernan, Sea -
forth ; Mn. LVellen Houghton, Michi-
Harry Downn. Tbe ey, Georrge Roachn were ,PPte
Mattbewe, Hugh Mc(lormsek, Joseph
Heffernan and J. Droullisrd.
Mr. John S. Brown died at hie home
on the 6th concession on Thursday
evening, 8th inst. Mr. Brown had not
enjoyed good health for several
months, but bad been able to be up
and around the house until tbe
day be died. Thursday evening
he expressed a desire to go outside and
have a look around. With the sr-
sistance of his son he wits able to go
out nut had not gone far when he
complained of feeling weak and it was
evident that somthing more than
usual -was wrong with him. With the
awistance of Mrs. Brown he was taken
into the house and laid on the sofa,
and in • few minutes the vital spark
bad fled. Mr. Brown was 77 years of
age. He was a native of the north of
Ireland. but came to this country
when quite a lad. Be was one of the -
pioneer eettlers of McKillop, and by
industry and good management made
a competency and leaves behind him a
fine estate of 3110 acres He was •
lover of good stock and always
raised and kept the beat. He was
one of the pioneer breeders in this
section of Shorthorn cattle and Clydes-
dale hones. He made a couple of
visits to the old land and much enjoy-
ed visiting the scenes of his youth and
the bonnet of his ancestors. He is sur-
vived by his widow said three eons.
He always took a lively interest in
public attain and at different times
was a member of the township council.
The remains were interred in the
Harpurhey cemetery of Saturday, Che
10th inst., and despite the unfavorable
weather the funeral was largely st-
tended.
