German Submarine Succeeded In Sink-
ing H.M.S. Hawke With Heavy
Loss of Life
The British cruller Hawke, launch-
ed )n ' ?zrfee - was a.wk -by a t sevedre
from a German nubmarane In the nor-
thern waters of the North Sea last
Thursday. Of her crew, which may
have numbered as many as 544, only
73 survivors have been reported. In-
cluding a lieutenant -commander and
three warrant officers. The Theseus.
a slater cruiser of the Hawke, also
was attacked by the submarine but
escaped undamaged. the torpedo in
this case going wide of its mark.
The survivors reported by the Ad-
miralty are Lieut -Commander Robert
R. Roeoman. Boatswain Sydney Aus
tin, Gunner' James Dennis. Airtime
gunner Harry Nvitt and 69 members
of the crew. 'Roseman and twenty
men were saved by a raft. the others
being pocked up by a trawler and
landed at Aberdeen. Among the miss
trig are Captain M. 1' Williams. Com
mender 11 A. Pratt Barlow and eight
naval cadets.
