OUNGANNON
Air, F. Ross. principal of Dungan-
non public school hits the following
to say regarding the' recent High
School Entrance examinations:
Myrtle E. Allen and Hlla Hasty
passed very creditably in all 'the 13
subjects of the recent Sr. Graduation
Examination except art. and vet
their school -work ir, this subject is w
standing credit to them. It is W be
regr ,ted that the Department of
Kduration teeth to attach am much
value to art. as it does to atithtuetic,
grammar, geography, err. When we
realize that art is a nut tit al gift. sure-
ly it is hardly fain to expert pupils to
rotate up to a standard of petfrrtiou in
a subj.-et for which they huge no
adaptability. It is vary discouraging
to a candidate who b8.' faithfully digs
charged his duties throughout the
year, to he cast out, and forced to a
repetition of the sante work for a
number of years because he faits to he
skilful in art. or perhaps deficient in
eoloun. it is just am erroneous to ask
a pxrpil of no arti-tic tendency to be-
come an artist, to ask a pupil' of no
Poetic geniis. to becotue et reset.
While we admire and appreciate- the
apathetic culture, and try, to develop
the beauty wherein it presents itwelL
surely we should not curry it to the
,.stent of being a dortiotelrt to the
progress of education in general. Art
should he s bnpue subject tet examin-
ation, and if Ir is not, the Department
should grant half the marks 00 the
work done throughout the year.
Candidates frequently do creditable
work during the yea' in ata, and yet
when they Cone to fare an examina-
tion on something foreign to the or-
dinary erbool work. they simply -fail
to do themselves juatice. WO hope
the time may worm come when the
Department of E.hrration will ser fit
to place this subject where it should
belong.
