MANY CONFIRMED
Bishop Williams, of London, Administers
Confirmation in Sr George's
Bishop Williams, of London, ad-
ministered confirmation to • class of
37 in Ht. Ueerge's church last night.
There were 19 stales and In females.
His Lordship also preached a very
able and instructive sermon, principal-
ly ly upon the theme cf faith, taking bis
text as "we -are children of Uod
through faith in Christ." From these
words he sought to show that many
although they Wight believe they were
naturally children of (God yet being
children implied conditions which
must be fulfilled.
The reverend gentleman in a very
clear . and lucid manner illustrated
that various walks of life and occupa-
tions implied obligations, which unleas
they were fulfilled, no benefits would
be derived, yet at the same time in
regard to religion, people were in
clued to be lax and neglect their
duties in this regard. "The question
is," he said. -will you serve God or
well you not'r"
He inferred that confirmation was
the taking of a stand and he exhorted
church people, as a whole, to come out
and stand boldly for the principles of
the church of Christ enunciated.
The sermon was a mast instructive
one and wise listened to with a great
deal of interest by a large congrega-
tion present.
Rev. Canon Hill, together with Rev.
J. b. Fotheringham, the rector of St.
George s, assisted with the nervier.

Motion of Appreciation Passed
The annual meeting of (loderich
district of the Methodist church was
held in North street Methodist church,
(iodeticb, on May Ytbt and 2nd. The
ministerial session convened oo Thurs-
day, the 2161., at two p.m., with Rev.
Jas. E. Ford. chairman of the district,
presiding and practically ever, mi ti-
ter and probationer was preset.
The report from the Victoria college,
Toronto, regarding Mr. John C. Ma-
lian and Mr. E. V% . Jewitt was accept-
ed, and these young men are being re-
commended to the cootsrenoe to he
continued on trial as probationers for
the ministry.
Mr. A. W. Brown, of Benmiller,
who was •'ordained for special pur-
poses" a year ago, and who has now
completed his probationary studies,
was recommended to be received into
"full connectionwith the conference.
Motions re Revs. B. Clement, Henry
D. Newcombe . and Josie. Greene
were passed to have their relationship
as superannuated ministers continued.
A resolution of brotherly sympathy
to Rev. Benjamin Clement in his
lingering illness was adopted and a
copy of it was ordered to be sent to
biro. Diecussioo of the pastoral work
elicited sows very interesting sugges-
tions, and the observation was made
that the direct presentation of the
simple Gospel with more of en evan-
gelistic, than dogmatic spirit, ought
to characterize the pulpit ministry.
GENERAL 51Wi10N,
In the evening the general session
began, but was not completed until
the following forenoon. The chair-
man, after the opening exercises, call-
ed the roll and again practically a Lull
attendance was recorded both of
Moistens and laymen. Rev. H. Wil-
lens, of Nile. was elected journal secre-
tary, and Rev. A. W. Barker, of Sea-
fortb, appointed statistical secretary.
The circuit schedules afforded in-
teresting data concerning Methodism
in this district. There are sixteen
circuits in ` this district. While the
figures given show a decrease in the
membership, it was pointed out that
this was due largely to the action of
one circuit where some seventy names,
which are still being retained on the
circuit register for reference purposes,
are not reported as members. These
names belong almost entirely to

Commercial interests have been
generally well sustained, a slight in-
crease in the contributions to the
missionary fund being noted. Few
circuits exceed the disciplinary "mini -
muni" in the amounts given for minis-
terial support, while among the
several circuits reporting a net de-
flciency, Bayfield, Walton and Nile
re particularly. noticeable. Rev,
W. K. Hater, pastor of North street
Methodist church, in deprecating that
thie splendid dl.trict should bave any
circuit withiri its bounds reporting a
deficiency in ministerial support, ex-
pressed his conviction that while
every circuit is doubtless interested in
the world-wide work and extension of
the Kingdom of our Lord. it ought
not to be urged in supporting the
work of (rod abroad until it bas su
c-
celded in supporting the work of Uod
at house adequately ; and that tb
support is not adequate until et least,
"the least amount" specified by discipr
line for ministerial support has been
raised. This cons iction was generally
approved, and the cases of Hayfield
and Welton were referred to the sus
-
tentation fund committee of-stfie
annual tonic'eoce.
This being the year for the (General
Conference to meet. the church pro-
perty report was also received.

made faith to church buildings and
parsonages. especially on the Varna

Methodist church. Goderich, reported
the erection of a handsome new par-
sonage at a coat of $'74811.
The Sunday school secretary, Rev.
J. E. Hunter. of Dungannon, in pre-
senting the district report enipbesized
certain items; for example, the increase
of 501n the number of scholars joining
the church during the year over the
Duntbet reported last year ; and shin
the increase of N81 in the total atten-
dance, "which," said h.. "is mutely a
