verencing your mother whether sbe s

served in inc United States but the
observance+ has now spread and is al-
most universally ob,.•rved in Canada

denotes purity: its form for beauty:
its fragrance for love and its wide
growth for charity. All these are
attributes of a true mother and the
wearer of the white flower is specially
reminded of them on that da
dillies Anna Jarvi.. of Phielphia,
lost her mother in IteXi. On the first
anniversary she determined to rever-
ence her mother's memory and took
this means of doing it. She wrote to
editors, clergymen and others in public
lite, asking them to help bar in the
spread of tbip ober:saner. On this
continent the day is almost univer-

United States and Canadian cities
thousands of dollars will be spent on

SHORT EXTENSION
CENTNE HURON HOTEL KEEPERb
GIVEN THREE MONTHS
License Commissioners for Centre
Huron in Conference Here on
Monday Decide to Grant Three
Months Extension of License —
Hotels Glove August First
All eyes were turned on the license
cowwLsioners for Centre Huron when
they sat for about one and a halt
hours to private conference at the
court bones on Monday ahar000n, de-
ciding whether they would deal a
death blow to the 14 licenses in this
part of the county over which they
had jurisdiction, or let them live on
for auotber three months. But al-
though the liquor people were keenly
iutererted anal some of them believed
they would have another year, yet
none df them blamed the commission-
ers as they realized that the commi.-
riuners ears unable to do anything
else. Their deciriuu that the licensee
would be granted for another year at
the but mestidg had been vetoed by
the license departoteut in Toronto, and
they therefore were compelled to
either close the barn up immediately
or give a three months extension.
No DEtfruit 81*Axo.
On account of Hon. W. J. Hanna not
taking a definite stand, by not saying
that the bars must be closed up nor
yet issuing any licensee, from friday
until Monday the bare were selling
liquor without a licsnne. although the
but.all-keepers had paid their Wooers
until August 1st.
8E( KIR COUNCIL.
It was a few minutes after two
o'clock when (he comuusaionen as-
sembled at the court house and they
believed they would only be a few
minute* making up their mind. Whsle
Ibis secret council was in progress •
nutuber of reporters waited patiently
in the hall. One hour pawed and still
they waited.
'1 hen emerged Inspector Johnston
and going to tn. 'phone be summoned
Mr. Jack Reynolds before the high
tribunal. A few minutes later Mr.
L. E. Denary was admitted into the
secret society. Things began to get
interesting and the bootie outside in-
creased. The closed door council soil
assumed its tuysterions aspect until
about one and r half hours had peeped
and then the decision was announced.
It further transpired that Mr. Rey-
e olds was questioned about his brother
James holatng two licensee. One in
Guelph and twat of the British Ex-
change hotel here. While the com-
missioners were meeting every person
in town was ,joterested. The liquor
people were •lraid tbat the licenses
would be cut oar immediately and that
they would have to pour their fresh
stock away. The temperance fighters
were hoping for the best, that the ban
would forever close as soon as the
meeting was over. but were $ little
afraid that the licenses might be ex-
tended three months or so. But how-
ever,when the decision wee announced
all seemed to be very satisfied with the
action of the board. It consisted of
Mr. R.J. Clutt, Clintorl, chairman; Mr.
A. E. Barker, Brussels, and Mr. G. M.

ON CHURCH GOING
Rev. J. S. Duncan, et L•cknow, Preaches
is Knox Church
In the absence of the pastor, Rev.
Geo. E. Row, who conducted anniver-
sary services in Lucknow Presbyterian
church last Sunda his pulpit in
Knox church was filled by Rev. J. 8.
Duncan, of Lucknow, who preached
two very good sermons.
The question of going to church,
the clinging to the religion of Jesus
Christ, was the theme of the evening
Ikldrew. The preacher commenced by
raying that be was much interested in
reading a number pt interviews in a
Regina newspaper. "This enterpris-
iug newspaper, as the preacher term-
ed 11, "bad soot its reporters out on
the street corners, Into hotel lobbies,
the public parks, and other places
where men congregate and asked
those people found there, why they
did not go to church ?" The reasons
given by these people were various as
one might suppose. Some said that
they had never been brought up to go
to church by their parents : others
declared that the did not think they
were any woese than three people who
went to church and again others af-
firmed that they would like to be witb-
fo the folds of the church but they
did not feel they were eligible—they
were not .good enough—aa the de-
mands of the church were too exact-
ing for them. Another lot of people
stayed from the house of tied
simple rearm that tbardid not ink
the pastor came up to their expec-
tations. They complained of hypoc-
risy in the church members and there-
fore they were afraid of being contam-
inated, should they become associated
with the church.
These excuses and many more were
trivial in the seiaister's mind mad did
not excuse anyone from staying borne
from church, if," said the pastor,
"religion is judged by those who pro-
fess
ewfess it. rather than by itself, It is not
fudged properly. it is just the same
to 000demn the principle of .ducatioo

The excuse which some people made.
that they did not want religign. was
also a Almay excuse and one which
.could not stand. Although people
might say that they did not want
religion. yet religion was natural for
man and in their hearts of hearts they
desired something to look up to wor-
