PLEA FOR COMPROMISE
Ulster Outlook Improved u Result of
Mr. Churchill's Offer
Much Interest was created by an
offer to Sir Edward Carson, the Ol-
ater leader, made by Winston Spencer
Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty,
W the course of a speech 1a the House
41t Oemtneas last week. The Minister
Wetted Sir Edward Careen to make
as attempt to compromise the home
rale question on the federal haste
Mr!Churchill Is said to have spoken
sUttrely tuz himself and without the
authority of the cabinet. John Red-
mond, in an Interview, said be did
not understand there was anything
sew L Mr l'hurehill's offer. but that
tt anything . ams of It be was ready
to insert himself to placate the Ulster-
man sed reach en honorable MMtle-
meet of the question.
The view of the Unionist leaders
t• that Mr /'hurchlll's offer entirely
Oranges the situation and Improves
the prospect of an agreement being
resehed.
The growing belief that civil war in
Ireland is a reality which cannot be
heaped It the Irish Home Rule Rill
ea law as 1t et present stands
seams to have influenced the members
ea both sides of the House, a It Btu
the newspapers supportin,i both par-
ties. Daring the past week the press
of both opinions has become more ooa-
d11atory In tone than it has been at
say previous stage of the discussion.
Nearly a score of torpedo boat de-
etroyen are now cruising off the
shore of Least Ulster. This Is probab-
ly what Mr. Asquith referred to when
be stated In the House of Commons
that the Government had taken effec-
tive measures to prevent further
'gun running.'

to the House he had received a re-
tainer ?roar the Dominion Treasury.
Mr. Rowell came back with a strong
denial. "I was not In the service of
the Dominion Government," he said.

he could prove that Mr. Rowell wit

The records would show that he re-
ceived 850.000 and over for that work.
Mr. Rowell stated that big firm had
acted In an advisory capacity t0 de-
fend the Interests of the province In
this matter, and that his tees had
come from the corporation, not the
government.

credit to those responsible, and re-
vived arguments to show It. Mr. J. G.
Anderson followed up by stating that
the arrangement was dishonest and
tricky.
M . Proudtoot and Sam Clarke
