INTaREST1wG LECTURE
Scotland in Sorg and Story Dtscuaaed by
Rev. J. B. Fothsriarham
Comruencing a course of lectures,
Rev. J. B. Futherioghetu ably and
Inter'eatingfy discussed Scotland in
coag sad story in ht. George's parish
hall on Thursday evening. There was
a good sized audience present and the
lecture was thoroughly enjoyed.
After giving a dust history of the
caAesr, origin of the Scotch language, the
wee. speaker dealt with the characteristics
as.wtr.aL of the Scot. He showed that some of
the greatest men of the past and pres.
sot in philosophy and seieuce were
how the land of the heather.
Ons feature of the language was that
by it use might tealther part or country
a man came from. Co'uoaring it with
the English tuugue, the lecturer show-
ed that theirs was not such a kiwilier-
ity in pronunciation and meaning.

The flcotcbman excelled in learning
and the reverend gentleman stated
that for the population and aim of the
country there were more students in
Scotland lhau in any country- in the
world. Edinburgh univer-ity had
more stridents attending it than any
college io the world. "It was the
centre of the medical profession," ob-
served Mr. Fotherin4bam.
In commerce Scutiand held its own.
The Hank of England and the Hank
of France had bosh heeq tounded by
Sot.. In other ways, in travel, iu
colouiz*tion, Scotland had played a
prominent part. "There was one laud-
able peculiarity about the Scot," said
the speaker. "and that was hu love
for his native land." Hr lamented
that patriotism was lacking in this "
country and urged more of it.
Tte lecture was well received and
listened :o with a great deal of in-
terest. At the close, Rev. Joseph
Elliott tendered the speaker a vote of
thanks.
