The Bowmanville News of last week

gentleman well known in tiodericb. a
brother of G. M. Elliott of town :
"A many-sided maxi" may tlttio$y
be applied to Mr. John Elliott. B. A.,
wbu has resigned as principal of Bow-
manville High School to accept •
mathematical maeterehip to a Colle-
giate Institute in the city of London at
a higher salary. Our High School has
maintained an excellent standing under
Mr. Elliott's presidency and the results
cf this year's Departmental examina-
tions are exceedingly gratifying to all
concerned, so that be retiree with
the school at high -tide of popularity
and success after dlliog$ most 'swept -

Outside of his primal duties as teacher
Mr. Elliott has been an active and use-
ful citizen and worker in church. Sun-
day s.hool and other spheres of useful-
ness. As he said bimself the otter
evening in the official board session,
the chief part of hgt life outside of his
vocation is his cbtich life, and that
be has always enjoyed. He has been
a very helpful church official and a
more than ordinarily capable local
preacher. He has always been heard
with pleasure. His life bas been also
associated with Sunday school work.
After passing the scholar period he
became teacher and hal served as
superintendent in Caledonia, Wall -sl.,
Brockville, Leamington and Bowman-
ville. He filled many other important
offices %%bile hese, such as president of
the local branch of the Bible Society,
chairman of public library committee,

dian ('Iubsince its formation; and bas
given bis influence in auppoet of every
movement for moral reform and
human bettertnebt in the community.
He bas also been honored on several
occasions in educational circles. He
has been president of the tusthetnati-
eal section and also of the high sehotl
principal' section of the Ontario Edu-
cation A-sociation and has been elected

Association in four different counties
including Durham. lo fraternal and

seen from tha foregoing outlive of his
nctivities'that it is no idle phrase to
say tb,lt in this town Mr. Elliott *ill
be Much missed and his place will not
be easily tilled in the community.
In speaking to a resolution of appre-
ciation passed at the official grarterly
board ..n Friday everting Mr. Elliott
said• that only in one place had 'he
lived longer than in Bowmanville.
His career offers encouragement to
youoc sten who have to make a living
for the-mselvee. Ile was bore of

learning he quit the bench to attend
the nearba public school. Hy diligent
study and working among farmers he
managed to continue at school till be
.,gained a teacher's certificate. Then
he taught a public school for five
years, studying all the time, and later

pointed the flet principal, and after
ten years of successful service he came
as principal to Bowmanville seven
years ago. He leaves here of his own
aecord to take a city position which he
is well qualified to fill.
Not the Answer He Expected. '
Rev. Gillies Eadie, the missionary
to Houan, China, in addressing the
Sunday school of Knox church ea
Sunday afternoon endeavored to im-
press upon the children the name of
the province of China from: which be
bad come. "Along in the summer
when the potatoes ate slowing up
pretty well, what does your father
send you out to dor' he asked. He
expected the reply, "to hoe," thus
bringing out the first syllable of the`
word "Bonen." iastead a youngster,
with s practical knowledge of potato-
growing, called out : "To pick off the
bugs." he missionary joined in the
laugh which followed.
