ACRLg) IN THE TOWNSHIP (t,
WDKRiCH.
The Presbyterian Summer School
for the Western division of Ontario,
and especially for the Bye ad of Hamil-
ton and I.nodon, began most
sue iciously on Monday evening
in Knox church. with a very credit- J
Able attendance of students and a
fall staff of instructors. The venerable r
moderator of the Synod, Rev. R.
Pettigrew, of Glenmoniy, presided at
the opening meeting and was assisted
in the devotional part of the mercies
by Rev. G. E. Roes, of Knox church,
and by Rev. Dr. A. B. Meldrum, of
Cleveland. Twice during the service
Mr. McBretney, Toronto. so:uist of the
committee on evangelism, delighted
the audience sod gave reel help by bis
rendez ing of Alexander's hyruns.
The moderator of Sytiokl in giving
his address form+lly t.pening the
school spoke of the town ot G.alerich
as a fitting spot for the holding of
such a school, not only because of the
beauty of its situation bit because of
its religious history, is w hicb Dr.
Cee hid taken so pleat a part. He
also spoke of the need in thele dice of
evangelizing the recreations' and the
holidays and of uniting the highest
thoughts with times of rest. "Ahsen.e
of occupation is not rest," and one of
the purposes of such schools as this
!!! was to aceomplish thin end of the
evangelisation referred to.
Rev. Mr. Ross gave • hearty wel-
come to the students who bad come
to attend the school.
Rev. Dr. R. P. MacKay. foreign mis-
sion secretary of the Presbyterian
church. then addressed the 'audience.
There was, he said, a g'ea' sense of
dissatisfaction in the church today.
1Ve would like to be worker, euch as
Christ was when up.yn earth. But
what were His chief characteristics as
a worker that were possible to us
First. He was from the beginning to
the end of His lire eodowed as to His
humanity with God's apiiit and di,jk
nothing without His guidance. We
must therefore yield ourselves to that
same guide. Their, too, He was iu:gbry
io the Scripture*. and to its all that is
possible. Again, He "emptied gave se up
hell"-ep7eased not himself g
all for the purpose that was His -t be
salvation of men. Lastly, He worked
with the utmost of confidence and
assurance of victory.
Rev. J. R. Hall, of Sarnia. made
intimation concerning the program
for the booting days and Rev.. 1;.
Fletcher closed this hopeful opening
meeting with prayer.

On Sunday afternoon a drowning
fatality occurred at the mouth of the
Maitland River, a young mho named
Ernest Mason losing bis life and his
compuoion, P. I.. Jennings, having a
narrow escape from a similar fate.
Both young men came here from Tor-
oeto and were employed by the com•
psny installing the new sprinkler
system in the Western Canada flour
IL 111.
Sunday morning they went up to
Meoesetung Park in • small rowtioat
with two other men. At that time the
lake was perfectly calm, hut in the
afternoon such • sea had risen that
only two lett in the boat for the recut ti
trip. 'They bad no difficulty until they
reached • point in the lake opposite
the river wroth, where they tried
to cross the bar off Accrill's t'oint.
The breakers in the shallow water
over the btr filled their small
craft with water and the boat
turned upside down. The men man-
aged, however, to cling to the over-
turned boat. The„hfe-saving crew
were •t once called, but before they
could get started two rowboats, one
manned by Police Sergeant Moore and
the oth'r by Tom Tufford, struck out
from the Point. Sergeant \(,.ore's
boat was buffetted back to the shore,
but TUqfford succeeded in teaching tbe
overtiUsted boat. Jennings bad been
holding Mason to the boat, but before
Tufford could reach them a big wave
had forced bim to let go. Mason
sank out of sight, while 'Tufford se-
cured Jennings and brought him back
safely to shote.
About d o'clock Mason's body was
washed :tshore on the beach south ot
the river breakwater. Sergeant Moore
summoned Dr. F.tumeisoo and 10-
gettet they worked for two flouts to
an effort to revive the body, D..
Hunter also arriving and giving his
assistance. The body had been in the
water for nearly an hour and a halt.
and the efforts to tesuacitate it we.'e
in vain. Reluctantly the workers gave
up their bootless trek.
Mason leaves a .rife and foot;
soothe -old son, who were with hint
in
Goderich.
The remains were interred in Mait-
land cemetery on Tuesday afternoon,
Rev. J. E. Ford conducting the funeral
services.
Tom Tufford deserves great praise
for his prompt and courageous action.
The waves were running very high.,
and it required a great deal of strength
rind skill, as well as bravery. to face
them.
The incident has shown the need of
more wodern and efficient life-saving
appliances at this point. If these had
been at band Mason's life might have
been saved.
land others who were at hand worked
over the body until about S o'clock.
