this is a work for the ladies of Oode-

"My next stooping place after Imre-
ng Prince Albert was southeast of
here. on the C. N. R., at Verigin. It
in that community that a num-
ber of the Doukhobor, have settled,
ut their leader, Peter Verigin, be. in-
uced about 4,000 of them to trek to
British Columbia, where a new settle-
ment has been formed. These people
live in villages or communities in much
the wine style -as the Russian does in
his native land. This man Verigin
to whom I have referred w. the chief
man among them at first, but to recent
years a number have thrown off his
yoke and are now classed as 'Inde-
pendents.' The Doukhobor is subject
toattacks of strange famatical emotions.
Just a few days before I reached Veri-
gin seven women and nine wen weut
out of the village about a mile, stripped
tbemselves of all their clothing, and
consigned it W the flames, along with
what money they had. They then
started on a 'pilgrimage' to the town,
but the news of their approach reached
Verigin ahead of them and the police
wsgbstrate took immediate step* to
intercept their marcb. Several special
constables were sworn in and the gang
was rounded up some distance outside
the village. They were placed in a
barn until clothing was found fur them,
after wbich they appealed in court
and were sentenced to six months in
the penitentiary at Prince Albert. I
believe that the strongest objection
which the Canadian settler h. to the
Doukhobors is their unwillingness to
mix with English-speaking people.
They resist practically all efforts to be
Oanadianized by living together in
small communities aced having no
dealings with more civilized neigh-
bors.
"As to the country in this district, I
might say tbat the bilis excellent and
the crops looked fine.
"There also is & email settlement of
Galicians near Verigin. These people
are making good and engage largely
in mixed farming. They live in
log huts thatched with heavy prairie
grass which look very picturesque.
"My next place of call waa at
Dauphin. This is a large town of about
4,500 population in the centre of a
good country just north of the Riding
Mountains- I met Mr. T. Bogie. an
old Colborne boy. When he landed
in the West twenty yeah ago he had
nothing. However, success favored him
and in time he was able to purchase a
quarter -section at 14 per acre. It is
now worth 815,000 and with all his live
stock his estate is now valued at 030,-
0110. Readers of The Signal in Col-
borne township will be pleased, I
am sure. to read of his good fortune.

at this junctura I might repeat the

the bed of which is ten feet lower than
