Mr. McQuaker is a c m,unision mer- chant in Oweu Sound and also the owner of a creamery. A proceseiop composed ex.lusively of automobiles over a mile lung in a Lown the size of Aylmer is quite an event. Tbis was out one of marry un- usual features in eounection with the mounter Liberal picoic held in that town on June 12. The celebration was held at the fair grottodb and the large Kranietauel w .. nut nearly large enough to bold the crowds. The lead- ing speakers were N. W. Howell, K. C.. M. 1'. 1' , Hon. George P. Graham, Hou. Mackenzie King and W. T. Chat hon, Liberal candidate in Bast Elgin for the Dominion House. Mr. Mows 11 referred to etas resignation of the Hoeg/trier' Cabinet owiog to the Prime Minister a having taken a oon- ttibutiou front a firm doing bubioesa with the country. "Ai•e the people of Ontario," asked Mr. Rowell, "lees sen- sitive than' the people of Hungary on questioosalYect ing :he b nor of our pub ,lone' and the bonest adniinistrat ion of public affairs? 1 debut believe they are. Except as to tbe amount of rte con- tribution and except that the payment was made in the one case to the Prime: Minister and in the other to the Pro- vincial Secretary. all that was estab- lished in the Hungarian case Sir Jaynes Whitney and Mr. Hanna were forced to admit. The principles, laid down in the case of the Hunearian Cabinet applied equally to the Whit- ney Government, with this important addition, that with the Whitney Gov- ernment the act was not only illegal but was criminal as well. Mr: Rowell. said that if the members of any British Cabinet had been found guilty, of any sucb conduct. public opinion in Great Britain would have demanded their immediate retirement. He de - chit .d that the Government had pur- chased the silence of the roan who was Prepared to expose them. riot with their own money but at the expense of the people of the Province. He was referring to the -abandonment by the Ourernruent of the defences it had set up in the Taylor -Scott buil, in wbicb, on the judgment of Mt. Thorne as sole arbitrator without appeal, Mr. Taylor tthe Taylor -Scott Co.) received g'21,000 of the people's money. As the explanation of such action on the part of the Government, Mr. Rowell quoted a sentence from the Tborne letter. "Phe' Wbitoey Governments -It stated. "as such were just as near to an over• throw about December, 11411, as it is possible to go. The tube was ready and the Match lighted." "And it was with the people's money," declared Mr- Rowell. "that this exposure was suppreasrd." Mr. Rowell coruplaiued that the Prime Minister had been constantly miereprr.enting his "abolish the bar" policy and therefore took this creation to state in definite terms exactly what that policy meant. By it. every bar- room, that is to say. every botel liquor liceo*e, would be wiped out, evert club licence would he wiped out and the treating :systeru would be abolished. As to the shops, at the' present time they existed in only about (me -tenth of the municipalities of the Province. The Liberal policy. tbrte- fore, would mean in nine-teritle of the municipalities the complete abolition of the retail sale of liquor and in the re - Ordaining one-tenth where *bops now exist they would be subjected to further restrictions and would he wiped out by local option wbere the elector should eo decide. "Oo Friday Mr. Speers drove me thirty miler west to Griswold. We secured photographs of several good feral residences on the way. In the afternoyn I bind an auto and started north, paving through the Indian Reserve near Griswold. Travelling over an old prairie trail we ran over and killed a number of gopher.. Tbeee little animals frequently do serious damage to the grain crop unless preventive measures are taken to get rid of them try the poitiun route. "Atter travelling about thirty miles north we turned west, reaching Lenore in the evening. The Jtlaaii, oba dernoobtrati)n train was there and seemed to be well patronized. Potatoes are selling there for twenty cents per bushel. The wheat crop in that eec- ti•,n is e. tiruated to - average about fifteen bushels per acre'.' After paying all expenses the farmer- will have cleared about ,Yelper acre. "Leaving Lenore I drove south to Virden and from that station took the train for Regina. From Indian Head to Regina we passed through a line prairie country and as far az the eye could me it was simply land and sky." PERSONAL MENTION. M. H.
