Co-operative Experiments in Weed
Eradication, 1918.
During the season of 1912, the Oe
tario Agricultural Experimental Un-
ion carried on co•operat lye ex perimen -
io the eradication of perennial sow
thistle, twitch grass, bladder tampion
and wild mustard. A number of prac-
tical men took part in these experi-
ments and some very interacting and
valuable results were obtained. A
properly cultivated crop of rape was
found to be an excellent means of
destroying perennial Dow thistle and
twitch grass. Rape proved more
effective in desuoying twitch grass
than did huckwheaL 'Thorough and
deep cultivation followed by potatoes
or corn gave good result• in tbe con-
trol of bladder can pion: Spraying

to be a cheap and effective. means of
destroying mustard in growing grain
without injury to the crop. Those

demonstrated to their own satisfac-
tion the effectiveness of the method
tried, and at the same tune their re-
sults furnished practical information
to others.
These co-operative experiments in
weed eradiation will be continued
this year (1913) and it is hoped that a
Large number of men will take part in
them io order that sufficient data may
be gathered to warrant definite state-
ments being made rettardiog the best
methods of controlling these pernici-
ous weeds. The experiments are as
follows : (1) The use of rape in the
destruction of perennial sow thistle.
(2) A system of intensive cropping and
cultivation, using winter rye followed
by turnips, rape or buckwheat, for
eradicating perennial sow thistle. (3)
The use of rape in the destruction of
twiteh grass (4) A method of cultiva-
tion and cropping for the destruction
of twitch grass. (3) A method for the
eradication of bladder campion or cow

the Man Who Does Not Use
Fertilizer
NATIONAL FERTILIZER will not only
save your labor bill but at the same time
will increase your crops.
NATIONAL FERTILIIZER is better than
manure became, while increasing your.
yields, it will build up your land. This is the
desire of every farmer who has his farm at heart.
Farmyard manure is admitted by all growers and farmers
in this country to be the best form of fertilizer to apply to
the, soil, and the reason for its being so is common knowledge.
but for comparison it would he as well to mention it. Farm-
yard manure is an organic manure, having the three elements
necessary for plant food (in this form), and by;ita application
to the soil you obtain that humus which is so essential for
plant life. caused by the decomposition*: organic matter in
IL But the three elements, nitrogen, t7iboephate• and potash,
are not in sufficient quantities to satisfy the requiremebts of
any crop, send coneegnenlIv YOUR CROPS ARE GRADU-
ALLY BUT SURELY TAKING MORE FROM THE SOIL
THAN 18 PUT BACK IN IT.
National ,Fertilizer is also an organic manure, but instead
of cattle manure it is human excreta, which is coneiderably
more valuable, and hy a special process of sterilization is con-
centrated and brought into much a form that it is as easy to
apply to the land as floe soil. It is dry and inodorous, harm-
less to handle and contains valuable fertilizing properties
which are iocreaeed by the addition af steamed hone flour,
blood flour and potash. which essentials make it the most
valuable manure on the market. It has been in use for the
past thirty years in England and there its value is universally
recognized it is suitable for all crops owing to its organic
base. and the results obtained by its use on general crops
should give an idea of its great value.
National Fertilizer

Potatoes 400 bushel,.

Barley .... 42 bushel.
Oats 58 bushels

Corn.... 75 to 100 bushels
The saving of labor in applying this manure is very con-
siderable. „teethe, great advantage of this over ordinary
farmyard manure is that the germinating power of the quan-
tltles of seeds of weeds which are found in farmyard manure
is completely destroyed hy sterilisation in the National Fertil-
izer, with the result that crops are elean and vigorous had their
