ASK FOR MANDAMUS.
Clinton Temperance People Pushing the
Ballot Inquiry.
Clinton, Feb. 1'7. -.Judge Holt hag
again adjourned the Clinton local op-
tion scrutiny. as a mandames is being
asked foe by W. Proudfoot. K. C.. rep-
resenting the local option party,
which will allow the judge to take
evidence regarding the alleged tamper-
ing with the.balloteof SLJohner ward.
The ' temperance people still claim
that the original return, as given by
the deputy returning officer, and
agreed to by the poll clerk. two sat a -
tenet., s and two candidates for council,
who helped him with the counting,
was the correct one, viz., eighty-four
for the by-law and fifty-one against,
and, as a further proof of this, a com-
mittee has been at work in the ward,
and seventy-eight of the eighty-four
have already signed sworn declara-
tions that tkey did on January 6th
telt mark their ballots for locel option.
The antis were evidently afraid of
this move. as anonymous letters were
sent to the voters of this ward advis-
ing them not to make any declarations
as to how they bad voted, for fear of
being called ioto court, but the voters
were not to be "scared ofT' in ties way.
and in most cases were very willing to
Resist in exonerating tbe deputy, who,
it would appear. had made • bilge
statement. as the judge now fin&
only sixty-nine ballots marked for the
by-ther and sixty-four aeainst. chang-
ing the tesjoiity from thirty-three to
five.
Thr ecrutiny has canned more discus-
sion than the canipeign its. If. and bas
been the leading topic for several
weeks. The outcome is being looked
for with a great deal of ieterest.
