GENTLEMEN, -It affwrds me great
pleasure to meet you at this annual
meeting of the Ooderich Board of
Trade. In many- things the town
must be congratulated on the past
business year and on the outlook for
the future.
In the townships the crops have
been below average, with the result-
ant unsatisfactory effects on business.
At the waterfront the breakwater is
progessing well, and $20,000 has been
placed in the estimates for the harbor,
while 800 feet additional for the south-
ern breakwater is being asked from
the Government, so as to make our
harbor safe tor entering and lying up.
The C. P. R. freight sheds. x fine
structure. are complete, and we look
for business to commence there early
in spring. Package freight outlook is
not so good. and the town council and
Board of Trade could be well oe-upie4
in developing it.
Three new railways are projecting
lines to reach Goderich and something
may some of them.
Steps should he taken to encourage
one of our beet assets -our summer
visitors -by making our beach more
accessible and more attractive.
The publicity campaign for the
county is well under way, and the
county town onset reap some benefit.
Tbe town should see to it that the
building of a modern up to -date hos-
pital on the grounds lately purchased
and paid for by the hospital board be
not too long delayed.
The installation of Hydro -electric
promised for August should not only
add enormouslyto the appearance of
our town, but of great convenience
to every citizen and immense advan-
tage to our industries.
Mi or Reid has set an example to
our citizens ot public spirit. by advis-
ing the council to appoint an indus-
trial board, financed by the town. to
obtain new industries. The citisses
will do their duty by voting for these
concerns when formed. Towne in

adding industries, population and
prosperity, the deed ones are degener-

An industrial propasit ion will be

of splendid executive ability and who is
now the contralling force of a pros-

premises in which the company has
been carrying on it, business in Tor-

were so cold that no outside work
could be done, the next few months

the erecting of buildings and also in
the making of bricks. There acre no

In addition to the large number of
odd jots that came to the Planing
Mills, they built a number 011 now
houses of a very good type, and did s
lot of remodelling or made additions
or alterations to others. The cou.pany
in some cases only supplied the

ternth annual meeting of the Trusts
and Goat antee Company, Limited.
in 191.1 this concern had guaranteed
trust funds of $82,9t2„ and e-lates and
trusts under its adwinisttatiou of
$641.142. Each year the amounts
pl.ced under its control have been
added to and the estates have appreci-
ated until today this company's trusts
muds total 1K4.50t*.141, and estates and
trusts total $5,l96.383.
This retnarkabie progress has been
year by year steady and substantial.
During the last eight years of the
cotupany'e existence the a -sets have
gone up from $2,870,900 to $11,146.(100.
A great deal of the *8sets is held in
real estate, largely in mortgages,
wbole debentures and other securities
form a not inconsiderable lobate of the
accounts. The progress of the com-
pany has been made without the as-
sistance of any great increase in paid-
up capital, as the annual report shows.
L.stear the net profits were
$117.90.75, and a balance left at the
sod of the year to the reedit of profit
and Iles account of 1304,540.
A general recognition of the advan-
tages that trust companies have for
the administration of,estates and pri-
vate trusts is shown strikingly in the
figures given above, yet in a great
measure the cautious though progres-
sive action of the directorate and
management has brought abut the
increasing success of the company.
A notable addition to the board of
directors was made wben the share-
holders elected Mr. E. B. Stockdale to
the directorate. in addltio-i to this
advisory capacity. Mr. Stockdale oc-
cupies the position of general manager
of the company.
