Not a White Elephant Gift. One of the most useful presents for a busy woman Is a /Imp!e mending bag. A more elaborate present may become a "white elephant" where an everyday necesetty of this kind will prove its worth repeatedly. A useful weft for a busy mistress of a house- hold is that of a cretogne pocket, sus- pended from a folding wooden frame, after the manner of a camp stool. The frame can always be procured easily and only requires sufficient cre- tonne of a dainty pattern to form the nucleus of an eminently serviceable sewing kit. When not In nae it can be folded up and placed in a corner, wbile It has a distinct advantage over the ordinary sewing bag. in that when the frame is extended the whole of the contents are vItible at once. The cretonne should be ganged on to the frame. with a beading of about an tach extending above the rods, while innsf pockets for the sewing addenda can be added to snit individual taste. The roved or square wooden boxes to wblch crystallized fruits are bought can be transformed into tbtngs of beauty, with the help of a yard or so of cretonne. Very fine cretonne should be used, and this sbonld be pasted on the box. An Extremely Useful Offering. Autherstburp, Nov. 24. -The new dock built at this port by the Canadian Government has bee n completed, and is said to be one of the bent docks on he west lakes. It is of cement, rein- forced with steel bait. ; ii 3110 feet long by 75 feet wide, and tapers on the south end. It is expected that the Government patrol rate, the Lambton and Vigilant, and the southwest shoal lightship will tie Up to the new dock for the winter. Tbe Adventures of the Fleetwood. The steamer Fleetwood has had en evrntfulcaueer the last six weeks. On the 21st of October she collided in the Detroit River with the sand steamer Pine Lake. The Piue Lake went W the bottom., carrying the ahecls• man with it, teecther meu, beiscf the crew escaping. It was from tbe tieck of the Fleet- wood that Clarence holey, the second cook, was washed oyertaoard a few weeks ego, the body coming abbot* above KrDtail. Attention has again been directed to the f,itelul vessel by an incident !«- ported from Vl'indeor, in the following despatch : After an all-night vigil and a mad race down the river the steamer Fleetwood, which rammed and tank the steamer Pine Lake just above Belle isle some weeks ago, was over- taken early yesterday and served with an attachment in a suit for 121,250. As the bort rounded the heed of Belle Isle near the scene of the recent accident, the tug, C. A. Lormsn, bear- ing Deputy U. S. Marshal Lyon, ran out from the shadows of the island and signalled the Fleetwood to slacken speed, The boat, however, continued oD her way without noticing the Lorman. Refusing to be baffled the master of the tog signalled for full .peed ahead, and ran sltegeide the Fleet- wood. Lyon shouted to one of the crew to lower a ladder, but was re- fused. Then followed a race between tbe tug and the steamer. As the tug tore alongside et full speed the Deputy Marshal attempted to t•eaeh the top of the steamer, which was high nut of the water. Finding he could not reach the bulwark of the boat, the Government officer made a flying leap, and succeeded in getting a firm hold of the stanchions. Tnere he hung .uapended for nears a minute before he managed to clam to the deck. Once on deck he proceeded straight to the captain and served the attach- ment for the amount claimed bythe C. H. Little Company for the vaue of the Pine Lake lie then ordered the captain to land at once, and as the beat swung around near the Canadian shore to msk* a landing the steerin gear broke and the boat ran mgrnund. She was there nearly four hours, and then released herself and pulled into the dock, where bonds were tarnished for the amount of the attachment. After taking coal 'and basing her steering gear repaired, she proceeded on her way. YOU TAKE NO RISK. Oar Reputatiea amid Massy Are Back of This O.
