ADVERTISERS PLEASE NOTE.
Christmas advertising has now
begun, and from this time until
Christmas is over there will be many
columns of holiday announcements to
be handled. The Signal is prepared
to give space for any quantity of ed-
vertJeiog, and would recommend to
the merchants of Goderich an aggres-
sive and extensive use of newspaper
space especially at this season ; but in
order that tree extra work of setting
up these announcement's may be
handled without undue strain we
would ask that our advertising pat -
roam kindly send in their "copy" as
early in the week as possible. This
will facilitate greatly the work of the
office, and will also enable the ad.
compositors to give each advertise-
ment more caretul attention.

SUBJECT OF A FINE ADDRESS
HOPI. W. H. HEARST.
BY
First Address In Soaro of Trade
Series a Sic. --In the Great
Northern Territory Ontario Has
a Magnificent Heritage.
The address given in the court house
on Friday evening Inst by Hon, W.
11. Hearst, Minister of Laude, Forest.
and Mines in the Ontario Govern-
ment, was a revelation of the capabill-
tier of a part of oar country to which
too little attention has been paid.
Kr. Hearst is an enthusiast is every-
thing pr'etaining to the development
of New Ontario, and probably moot ot
those who heard him on Friday even-
ing caught some of his enthusiasm and
will hereafter have a more exalted
opinion of the great territory ta the
n:nrt b.
Mr. Hearse's visit to Ooderich was
at the inetancr of the Board of Trade,
and was the first of a aeries of Such
affairs proposed to be held during the
winter month,. if the subsequent
addresses are as well ver rte hearing au
Mr. lfearst's, the effort of the Board
of Trade will be voted s great euccees.
The liini..ter arrived by the early
evening train on the G. T. H. and was
met at the Hotel Bedford by a number
of Boaid of Trade members, who took
supper with him.
Dr. Macklin, president of the Board
of Trade, was cnairman of the meet-
ing in the court house and introduced
the speaker of the evening. °
Mr. Hearst said this was the first
time he had ever visited thin part of
the country, but be bed heard of the
beauties of tioderieb and he nese glad
to come here. He spoke of the Board
of Trade as an institution that should
mean much to the conimttnity. A
town council wee sleeted for one year
only. which made it constantly sub-
ert to change of membership ; while
a Board of '1 rade, composed of ener-
getic, enthusiastic and successful busi-
ese men, wee Dot so circumscribed
o its work and was Fel a position
to give most most valusble service to
community. He advised the busi-
es men of (lode"icb to be interested*
n the Board or Trade, to altatod ire
Meetings, ani to take a brood view of
Lite questions that came heft** it.
Plunging rhes into the subjeet of
oethers' Ontario, Mr. Hearst epoke of
the importance of that territory not
nly to this Province but to the whole
Canada and even to the Empire.
o points of area, he said, Ontario was
the
second Province of the Dominion,
Quebec being the largest. British
Columbia ranked next after Ontario.
uch was said of the great grain
elde of the West, but last year On-
rio raised field crops of thirteen mil -
ons greater value than tbowe of
ketchewan and Manitoba corn -
hied. There were splendid agricol-
ral lands in Northern Ontario, and
ith the immense development that
as possible Ontario would not only
0intein her position as the premier
riculturel Province of the Donato -
but would increase her lead.
The mineral and timber wealth of
e country also was described and an
ur'e address was closed with an elo-
uent peroration.

That Breach of Promise Case.
The mock court trial to be given
under the auspieea of Abmeek Chapter
I. O. D. S., in the court ,house, on
Monday evening, December 2nd,
promises to be an event of unusual in-
terest. Judging from newspaper re-
ports of similar entertainments con-
ducted by the present management it
would seem to be one of the most
amusing things now offered for public
patronage:
It will be. in the Bret place, an ex-
act reproduction of a Court seine in
methods and procedure and on this
account will be extremely interesting
to ladies and others who haw' never
attended a real trial.
Beet of all will be the relined fon of
the whole affair. With J. L. tplorwo,
Req. presiding over the sowrt, Mrs.
Burdett* appearing as the brakes-
as
plaintiff, J. G. flV. N, !i
as Um defendant, bbl. A. V. Isww
of Warrantor, Nass., peoeeeut lff the
rase, and Charles °arrow. Rq. de-
fendl the accused, to say nothing of
the t array of evert officers,
witnesses and jurors, it Y pretty Der
fain we shall have all the comedy and
reality of • rtrtetrt scene and enough
whoiseome fun to last sorbet* year.
Indeed. It is predicted by tbos. in a
to know that from the epee-
VoUrhe court un1l the time of the
case the audience will be kept keyed
np to the point of convulsions by the
uniaie pr'oo..dings.
Wit, pathos, eloquence, Mt:

A PHOOOLEM IN COWS.
On every farm there are practically
three classes of cows. Firsttho
that do not pay for their
feed
and the labor of taking care of them ;
second, tbnee that just pay their way,
and, last, those that are profitable
cows, and pay more than their ex -
penmen, thus giving you some en-
couragement for keeping them. From
the farmer's point of view here should
be only one class ot cows, the ones
that pay a dividend over expenses.
Take the cow that produces three
hundred. pounds .10 butter per year.
At twenty cents per pound this would
bring 100. Let this Sts, he interest
o0 your outlay at s1z per cent. The
outlay would be one tho,a-,.:.d dollars.
Then take the cow in•..IIle lag six
hundred pounds of butter per year.
The outlay should be duuhle that of
the tint,, cow, as the production is
double or two thousand dollars per
year. Now answer w tew question.
honestly. We will say the first is a
poor cow and the latter a good cJw.
Does it take twice as much to feed the
cow as it does the poor one ?
verything goes to prove that the
opposite is moreuften the cage. Again,
does it take twice as ouch time to
attend to the good cow at the poor
one? Everything and everybody says.
"NO.” What is the result 2 Only that
the difference in the production is
