IN SPITE OF RAIN
THE PEOPLE COME IN CROWDS
TO THE 000ERICH FAIR.
Receipts the Largest in the History of
the Exhibition -Format Opening
Address by Chief Justice Sir Wil-
liam Mulock-Unfavorable Grow-
ing Season Affects Some of the
Exhibits.
In spite of the fact that it rained on
day of the Exhibition this week,
the directors are congratulating them-
selves upon another success and the
treasurer reports the gate and grand-
stand receipts the largest in the his-
tory of the Exhibition.
In suss respects, it must be said,
the Exhibition was not up to the
mark. Owing, no doubt, to the pecu-
liar weather this season, there is a
scarcity of prodocts in some lines,
notably field roots, which was re-
flected in a very small exhibit in these
lines at the fair. The farmers, too,
are so backward in their work that
many of tbem could not take the time
to prepare articles or animals for ex-
hibition. This u probably the chief
reason for the falling off in live stock
exhibits. There is some complaint to
the effect that too much attention is
being paid to the amusement end of
the Exhibition. to the neglect of the
agricultural features. The people,
however, seem to expect "attrac-
tions." and the directors this year
found themselves unable to secure any
medium-priced attractions that were
worth the Looney asked for them and
consequently decided upon bringing
at large expense the performing ele-
phants which were shown only at
Toronto and Ottawa io this Province
in addition to Goderich. The direc-
tors are bound to keep the Exhibition
the great boliday occasion of the dis-
trict ; but it is to be hoped that a ape -
clad effort will be made next year to
"boom" the agricultural and, indus-
trial features and make the Exhibi-
tion what it should be as a display of
the product. of the district.
As already remarked, it rained on
each day of the Exhibition, but for-
tunately the rain came at such hours
aa not to prevent a great turnout of
people. On Tuesday, despite heavy
rain in the Morning, people came to
town in great numbers, and when
it cleared oft for the afternoon one of
the biggest crowds that were ever on
the fair grounds gathered. it rained
again in the evening, and the attend-
ance was c.lmperatively small, tet tha
receipts of the afternoon had already
put the treasurer on "Easy street."
The arrangement of exhibits was
much the same as in previous years.
The south end .of the main building
was exceptionally attractive, as. the
display. of fruit and flowers were es-
pecially large and good. The com-
parative failure of the field exhibits
left the north wing rather bare.
Chas C. Lee occupied the centre of
the rotunda with an attractive dis-
play of stoves, ranges and general
hardware goods, set oft with an effec-
tive arrangement of gaily colored
hammocks.
George Hohmeier, tbe furniture
mac, had a display of very handsome
goods in his line, conclusively demon-
strating that the people of Goderich
and vicinity can procure the highest
class of furniture right in their own
town. A Nordheimer piano, for
which Mr. Hohmeier is the (iodericb
agent, was included in the exhibit.
Many remarks of pleasure and con-
gratulation were made over the dis-
play of Hodgens Bros., who in spite of
the recent fire at their premises uutee
a very handsome showing of rugs and
curtains just passed tbrough the cus-
toms.
L. B. Tape had an exhibit of Singer
sewing machines and was kept busy
demonstrating their superior points.
Jas. F. Thomson had an exhibit of
musical goods that was a centre of
attraction. The .exhibit included the
Heintzman pi+tn. , the player piano,
and Edison phonographs, al.o the
White sewing machine.
U. J. Ha, per trade an extensive du -
play of Gnroey Oxford r•.oves.
The We -tern Canada Flour Mills
Co. hada h' display of Purity flour.
Upatalre U. Millar & Son had a
space very attractively arranged to
show some of the goods carried at the
Scotch Store, including curtains, rugs,
drapes, "GIA Basal" household linens.
and other goods (/f the high quality
for which the Millar store is noted.

was not so readily prepared to admit
Huron's superiority in the matter of

The Special Attractions.
Following the address by the Chief
Nailer, a program was carried out
before the grandstand lasting all
afternoon.
The Goderich Boy Scouts, under the
direction of Scoutmasters Jas. Carrie
and Dan McDonald, gave an interest-
ing demonstration of &out work.
With their trek -cart, containing the
material for their work, they marched
in opposite the grandstand and pitched
their camp on the road. One section
pitched tent, another section built a
fire and set up the camp kettle, while
still another erected a flag -pole. The
Union Jack was hoisted to the top of
the pole as the band played "(nod Save
the King," and the Scouts gathered
around the kwle and stood at salute.
As an exhibition of camp discipline a
Scout was "tossed in a blanket by his
comrades, and finally a demonstration
of "first aid to the injured" was given.
Two boys started "sculling," and one
was supposed to be hurt.. He was
taken in hand by Carman Stoddart
and Morris Swanson, two Scouts who
have recently taken their ambulance
badges, and when they had finished
with htw be was bandaged from bead
to foot and was then taken away on a
bicycle ambulance, presumably to the
hospital.
The big feature of the program ("big"
in more ways than one) was the- per-
formance of Power's trained elephants.
There were three grown-up elephants
and • baby. two years old. The baby
elephant performed under the direction
of Mr. Power's sixteen -year-old daugh-
ter and among the wonderful and
amusing things it did was to ring a
handbell, play a mouthorgan, stand
on its hind legs and also on its head,
drink from a bottle, srnoke a pipe, play
ninepins, kick a football, rock a dull in
a cradle,t • fire inr• stove, and go
to bed imalalkerdietheybed between white
sheets. The bigger elephants were put
through • program of tricks by Jiaiam
Power. They are certainly well
trained creatures.
A pretty exhibition of Highland
dancing was given by lbs Missal Flora
anti Verna McDonald, of Wingbarn;
their father, D. E. McDouald, playing
the accompaniment on the bagpipes.
The youog ladies are clever and ac-
complished dancers and wear meddle
which tory have won at competitions
all over Dotal io.
The 33rd Regiment band, under the
leadership ot A. Roy Adaws, gave ex-
cellent service all through the Exhibi-
tion. The band is realty one or the
best textures ot the fair.

fore the grandstand,the Idway put
top a program of great varety, among
the features being a v1/ riloquist, a
palmistry expert, a seven -footed colt,
r .booting gallery, muscle -testing
affairs, etc. The most popular place
for the young folks was an enclosure
in which halt-a-dosen donkeys and i.}
little pony were for hire. Hundreds of
boys and girls enjoyed a ride on the
little animals.
A baseball game also was on the
Tuesday afternoon program. The
game was the final one in the church
league series, to decide the champion-
ship for the season of 1912. The teams
represented Knox chur:h and North

ed by Fire.

residents of Goderich, suffered a severe
loss at Parry Sound last week, when
their factory was burned. The Parry

it wise impassible for the fire brigade,

The total loss will reach from $76,-
000 to $1011,000. There was W46,000 in-

n ose on the lumber, several piles of
