a request from the Club tbat the
council give some a.sietanoe towards
meeting the expenses of the proposed

Sturdy pointed out that the event was
one which all the townspeople and
visitors could enjoy, either ea partici-

the expenses of the regatta.

of the events on the program were not

NORTHERN ALBERTA.
Mr. Oakley Gres Signal Readers Some
lawmen Information
A visitor in town is Mr. M. Holed -
ton Oakley, of Pembina, North
Alberta. Tbo Signal was glad to
meet him and get some pointers on
the great district north of I:.imonton.
Mr. Oakley says :
'There are very few Easterners who
have bees very far„ north of Edmon-
ton and 000aequenlly very little ie
known of the country which is des-
tined to be one of- the most wealthy
parts of Canada The C. N. R. line
runs up to Athabasca Landing and
hare all railway communication
ceases. This town has become well
known, thanks to the real estate men,
but to the ordinary individual pre-
sent& a very poor and somewhat sor-
did appearance. From here travel-
ling is accomplished by water and by
horseback. 1 came through on horse-
back by myself this spring to Atha-
basca Landing froon my ranch, 102
miles north, and that journey is
almost indescribable. I had my own
trail to make and was nearly eaten up
by mosquitoes and bulldog flies. The
land is .11 prairie only oovered with
heavy brush, it testing about $1S an
nose to 'slash and break.'
"The summer is short but hot, yet

The win very severe, the mer-
cury sinking to 70° below zero. i
have slept out under a wagon when it
has been 89° below and never before
that did i realize wbat a splendid
place bed was.
"Of course 1 went out to 'rough it,'
but everyone need not do the same.
Most people going out West make for
some large and well-known town.
This I think is a mistake. Go to some
small town just growing up and
grow up' with it. Be on the ground
floor. I would like to mention lust
two or three towns in the Peace River
District that are bound to be 1 urgge
towns very shortly and are simply
waiting now for the railway, which 1
being pushed ahead from Edmonton
at the rate of a mile a day. There is
Gr•ourard, on the Lesser Slave Lake, a
place where every traveller t. the Peace
River must go. This town is growing
rapidly. Fort McMurray is another
tars which appeals to the settler, and
Last, but not least, Dunvegan, the pro-
posed terminal of the Edmonton, Dun -
vegan and Peace River Railway.
Any of these towns are good and a
man can always be sure of makicg a
good living. 1 am not a real estate
man, nor do I 'boost' these towns,
yet I speak from what i have seen and
what I know.
"If there are any readers who would
like to know more about this country,
I will do my best to enlighten them if
they will enclose a stamped addressed
envelope."

SUMMER SPORTS.
A Lively Baseball Game.
On Wedneeday afternoon, civic
holiday, owing to the kindness of two
good old baseball sports, Vic. Dean
and Bob McKay, Ooderich was
treated to r gems of baseball. After
some brilliant and some hushleague
playing spread over nine inning.,
Ooderich carne home in front, t
score standing 14-13. For some rea-
son "Pacer" Bell did not show up and
Bert McCreath got on the inound for
Ooderich. Bert was very good, and
outside the fourth innings, when the
Godetich team had stage fright, would
have won bis gage. The old reliable
Jim Wiggins showed up and he re-
lieved "Kaiser" in the seventh. 'The
Box Oar" struck out four men in the
