THE OUTSIDI BREAKWATER.
Ceotracter's Men Are Potting in Long
Days to Rush Work Abag.
Work on the outside breakwater is
progressing nicely. The dredging out -
lit is kep busy carrying gravel and
dumping it into the cribs, several ot
which are filled. The gravel is taken
from the•northwest corner of Harbor
Island and a big slice has already been
removed from that corner. The barge
Abercoro, which is equipped with
cement -mixers, hoists, etc., is em-
ployed on the work. In order to facil-
itate the loading of the gravel, large
hoppers have been built on the north
pier, with lines of rails running from
the top along the beach. The care are
brought to the foot of the incline by a
horse. hauled to the top by a donkey
'engine and their contents dumped in.
to the hoppers. When the Abercorn
comes alongside, spouts shoot the
gravel into her hold, reducing the
time necessary for loading to the min-
imum. When the first outside break-
water was built, great blocks of con-
crete were made on shore and placed
on''the cribs, these in turn being cov-
ered by a cap of concrete. On the new
work, however. the cap is being placed
directly on top of the cribs, to which
it is bound by hundreds of reinforcing
