THE MAITLAND FALLS.
A Little Story Which Recalls the Late
Jonathan M lien.
The soldiers in their field work this
week have been out in the neighbor-
hood of the Falls of the Maitland.
Which reminds us of a little story of a
nal occurrence some years ago when
the late Jonathan Miller was the !mai-
face of the Benmiller hotel. First, let
it be known that in the summer time,
when the river is low, there are no
Falls to speak of, as the water perco-
lates through the cracks in the rucks
some eight or ten feet high and goes
away noiselessly and unobtrusively
on its way to the lake. Well, the
story goes that a party of tourists who
were staying at one of the hotels in
Goderich, and were finding the time
heavy on their hands (this was a good
many years ago, remember), asked
the proprietor if there were any eights
to be seen within walking distance of
Goderich which would wake an
objective point for a day's outing.
"Yes, " he replied, for he WAS a i
hit of a wag ; "there are the Big
and Little Falls on what is called
the Canada Reserve property. 1
To reach them you will have to walk
along the river bank a distance of
about eight miles ; you will fled the
Falls situated about one toile from a ;
village called Benmiller." Accordingly
the next day the party left in good
spirits, provided with all sorts of re-
freshment, liquid and otherwise, and
after tramping along the rough, stony
riverside until they arrived at the
Benmiller bridge one of the party
climbed the road to the hotel and;
queried, "How much farther is it to
the Falls?" "What Falls ?" asked
Mr. Miller. "Why, the Maitland!
River Falls." " The genial Jonathan
then had to explain that the petty had
passed the Falls in their walk, and
the discovered that they had been
"sold" by the Goderich hotel -keeper.
However, the jovial face of the big
Benmiller man and the prospect of
good cheer in his hostelry soon reas-
sured them, and put them in good
humor to appreciate the really magni-
ficent scenery along the river stretches,
and their outing proved to be a very
enjoyable one after all.
