About 2,000 men are uuw in camp across the river at At trill's. All day Monday and until the small bourn ot the next morning the men were arriving in detachments at the camp, arid the Middlesex Regiaueut, which marched all the way up on foot, arrived this afternoon. The troops encamped include five infantry regiment., the doth Middle- sex, 900 strong ; the 27th Lawbton, 200 men ; the 30th Wellington Rifles, 300; the 38nd Bruce, 2M), and the 33rd Huron, 275. There are two regiments of cavalry -the 1st Hussar, with 385 men and horses, and the 84th Grey's Horse, 260 strong. In addition there are detachments of the Army Service Corp.', the Army Medical Corps, the Canadian Ordnance Corps, which, with the cfllcers at staff headquarters, will bring the number well up to and possibly ov, r the 2,000 mark. When the city regiments arrive next week tee number will be swelled to 3,000 or over. The camp quickly settled into the routine of work. and so far there has been little to report outside of the usual incidents of camp life. The companies have been working smartly and are showing a good standard of effieirncy. Good work is being done at the rangeb, wbere the men are shoot- ing for their efficiency pay. The work at the ranges will conclude tomorrow. d The conditions in camp appear to be very satisfactory to the men and no complaints are bevel. This happy t state of affairs is due in no su,nll t measure to the good work of the camp c ided in two divisions, one of will bivouac on the Falls Rosary Tuseday night sad the other on Wed- nesday t. The Middlesex Regiment, 275strong, arrived in town about 1:30 this after- noon, having marched on loot all the way fro:n Lucan. The regiment com- menced its forty -five -mile walk on Monday, and its progress was marked by hearty receptions at every village along the line of march. The men were in fine condition when they reached Goderich, and the novel ex- periment of marching to camp, instead of employing the usual means of trausportation, was proved a splendid success. No doubt there were some blistered feet, but nobody "fell out," or complained of hardship. A good half of the regiment i,' composed of Indian., moat of them stalwart fel- lows who present a fine appearance on parade. Lt. -Col. Coo*iderable alarm has Wen elated by the d'ath of a number of cattle in Goderich township from a disease which has been di•gnwetl .a s rabies. Stariogeot measures have bet' taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and so far as is at present known it is confined to one farm. On Monday of WC week a cow belonging to Mrs. Jos. Salkeld, Bayfield road, died atter • sickness of some dayr. Dr. Clark, V. N., wbu had been coiled, found about a • pirt of rusty shingle nails in ita stomach, and naturally it Tould have been concluded tbxt these were the cause of its death h•d not another• cow on the same farm been attacked with similar symptoms the same evening, and a third one the following morning. Dr. Clark's suspicions were im- mediately aroused and he wired to Ottawa for w expert to come up and give bis opinion. Dr. Stork, V. 8., of Toronto, a Dominion Government inspector, arrived on 'Friday and unhesitatingly pronounced the trouble to be rabies. By this time the second cow had died and the third wee in the last stages and was at once destroyed. Subsequently a steer died. but the symptoms were not so other cases. have 'been taken With tits animate Doe by t before it was nown how they were affected. Owing to an abrasion on his hand, 1t was considered advisable that George Salkeld should take the treatment for such eases at the Pasteur institute in Toronto, and be left on Saturday for that purpose. The farm on which the affected cattle were kept was promptly quarantined, so there is no damage of contamination. It should be explained that this farm is not Mrs, talkeld's home farm, but one fartber down the Bayfield road on which 110 person is liyng. Two or three other cows in .the township have since died under rather suspicious circumstances, but 11 is not known that rabies is the cause. It is suspected that they may have been poisoned by eating leaves and grass checked been sprayed with insecticide. In one caste, that of an animal belong- ing to Jas. Harrison, the head has been sent to Toronto for examination. A strict watch is bring kept by Dr. Clark on the remaining cattle at the Salkeld place and on ueighboring ferns, in order that any further case., if there be any, mt.y be promptly detected. Reg. Sturdy Attacked by Dog. The alarm occasioned by this out- o break bas been increased by a savage attack made by a supposedly mad deg Sturdy,on - Sturdy. oftheLith cooceesionf euMnf Dod}tich township. This occurred on - Monday morning of this week. The young mai drove his team to a grave) pit on the 5th concession, and in walking *bold to decide where he should Iced be came upon the dog, which sprang at hint viciously. A fight efl*ueo .0 which Sturdy was bitten sever ,l times and bad his clothes badly torn. Having no weapon at hand he fought the dog vests feo't and hands and the beast finally made off to the swamp. When the new, was spread throughout the neighborhood fifty farmers armed themselves with quos and started in pursuit of the dog, hut were unable to find it. Sturdy left the nest day for Toronto to take the Pasteur treat- ment. The township Board of Health acted with promptness issuing a Proclam mation the sae clay to the effect that every dog most be confined. on penalty of its being shot and the owner fined tis.
