Th change to the appearance of the diem ber was ao marked that it called forth much favorable comment. In the report of the sexton of Malt- lavd cemetery the request was made that the water -pipe. he extended to the newer pails of the cemetery. ('otnciller Elliott stated he had ad- vised that such a report be sent in. He expressed it as his opinion that fifty feet of hose remold be supplied in two lengths for the use of the per- sons owning lots in the cemetery. The lawn mower was practically use- less for ladies, because be acid he couldn't make it work himself. The Mayor suggested that the parks com- mittee go cut and make an inspection and .bat it have power to act in the purchase of hose and attending to the awn mower. This met with the ap- proval of the council. "Docu want soy seats out there ?" asked Deputy Reeve Clark. "No. we wouldn't get them." was Councillor Elliott's reply. Mayor Reid rend a letter from Hon. The Colonel promisee to give the necessary eoan- cial assistance. Mayor Reid reported that the Iran ebiss which the Bell Telepbone Co._ held for the use of the town streets bad expired. The Reeve said he had received a letter from the Reeve of Btytb, stating that municipality was anxious to secure telephone connec- tion with Oodericb at the same price as paid by the subscribers on the Col- borne system. There was a disagree- ment as to what would be the hest form of notice to send the Bell Com- pany. One of the councillors wanted to notify the company that the Iran. chess was cancelled. but it. Reeve Mun- nings, chairman of the public works committee, stated that the action taken had been advised by the solici- tor as the proper course to pursue. Councillor Yellow, chairman of the harbor committee, stated that four spites on the commercial dock in front of the freight sheds needed to be replaced. Several new planks no the dock also were needed. He considered it was something which required immediate action. The wet- ter was referred to the barber committee with power to act. Reeve Munnings suggested test the small park in front of the summer betel be cleaned up. Councillor Vauatter added that a few seats placed there would he a good more on the part of tbe padre committee. Councillor Elliott, the chairman of the committee, apparently was not at all impressed with the idea of try- itag to obtain the council's consent to secure any seats. Just at that time be coerced to be doing some hard thinking to devise some scheme to force tux directors of the Goderich Skating and Curling Association to keep the green cut on the boulevard around the West street rink property. The Mayor said that unless there were noxious weeds growing up with the gram no action could be taken. The question of building a floating footbridge across the river at the foot Iof Waterloo street was lett with the public works committee. Reeve 'dun- ning. mentioned that the steps at the foot of Waterloo street -were in such a condition that little more could be done towards repairing them. Coun- cillor Elliott said be had taken the matter up sed told of having a man go over them and with tbe use of five pounds of spikes they were as safe as could be made. Nothing, he said, could be done towards erecting new ones, as the volume of water pouring down the hill prohibited any such work being undertaken. peeve Munoings mentioned (bat some work which he authorized had been done on the steps in addition to that which was done under the supervision of the parks committee. "Well, Pm sure 1 don't wont the job." was Councillor Elliotis comment, and wben it was decided that the parks committee should be responsible for the care of the steps the nailer was dropped with evervbody in good humor. George'Mcefillan was beard in ref- erence to the flooding of his land on the south boundary of the town He complaioed that for three years there had been too much wetted and be wanted to know what the council in- tended doing about it Reeve Mute flingssaid that the public works com- mittee would investigate and endeavor to -give relief 1. soon as possible. The Mayor brought up the matter of arranging for a celehrution on July 1st A sum not exceeding 1150 was voted as an amount to be offered in prizes for children's Igames and the Mayor and Deputy Reeve Clark were instructed to can a meeting of citizens to arrange further details. A dispute between Oswald Sturdy and J. W. Craigie relative to the leas- ing of the office in the package freight sheds then was given a little airing, the two penens staling their cases to ibe council. Al it was purely a case of disagreement between the -two men the Mayor decided (bat the council need not interfere.
