A Goderich township orchardist re- marked to the writer • few days ago that he expected to see the whole lake belt from Goderich south devoted to trait -growing. This would he a splen- did development, and judging from the way things are moving in Gode- rich township at present it is Dot en improbable one. One thing that will be very much needed. however, along with such a development will be better transport - alio" facilities, such as an electric rail- way would furnish. The devious meta of Mee J..W. Motes basemade the rlblsaf>i of %.iaetrie railway. enter- prise in this district so far a Irish' sad one : but under different auspices an electric railway through the fruit belt of Goderich township to Bayfleld and on to Zurich and Exeter ought to be a good proposition. The municipalities conceroed, while perbape not at pres- ent prepared to go into such et0 under- taking, should keep the project in mind as one that should not be too long neglected. NO OCCASION TO WORRY. A few people in Canada are doing • tremendous amount of worrying over (-amide's rtlatiomelip to the Empire. It is said that her present position is illogical, ami there are those who argue for independence and, on the other hand. those who want a definite scheme of Imperial federation. It is quite unnecessary that either alternative should he chosen. In the first place, the British Empire is not founded on logic. If indeaendence or Imperial federation is desirable in it- self. in preference to the present rela- tionship, the people of Canada will no doubt in due time make their will known ; but if they are satisfied to re- main as they are, "Illogical" as their position may be, they will not be moved by all the learned argu- ments or perfervid orations that can be levelled at them. This is not to say that Canadians should give no thought to matters of Empire or to their Imperial obliga- tions end responsibilities. More per- haps than ever before, Canadians have within recent years been "thinking imperially," and Canada has been gradually taking upon herself a share, perhaps not so large as it .bould be. of the Imperial burden. This process of development within the Empire cin be continued indefinitely, so far as one may now see, without any violent de- parture from our present "illogical" but satisfactory position. THE PROBLEM OF THE CHURCH. At the meeting cf the Hamilton (•inference of the Methodist church some speakers deplored the decline of the "old-fashioned religion" and pleaded for • return to the methods which set wed the church in the past. A discussion of this question would bring us on ground upon which it would he well to tread IlgbUy : but to our mind the speakers on another safari at the same meeting came Nate nearer the point of demonstrat- ing why the caure..h today cannot "get results" ea readily as it did in the past Times speakers declared that Use st- tsatloa of the church must be directed to social problems. '.(nod never in- tended that some people should live in palaces and some in slums. it 1. our hte.imeae to preach the Gospel of Jeans Christ and apply It to things about us," were sarong tb' res.ete of one ciergysaa who bed evitllsudy beer orudying the signs of tie times. There is probably more real goodness in the world today thou ever before; if it does not express itself in the "old methods" it is perb.ps because the old methods are, to use an everyday ex- pression, out of date. The problem is one te which contereoces and ayoode and assemblies will doubtlew find themselves devoting • good deal of at t en tion. EDITORIAL NOTES. Mankind never grows old. The cir- cus incus still makes a red-letter day for children and grown-ups. For a "dead issue, reciprocity ap- pears to he giving the Con*ervativr- press s vast amount of concern. It might be a good thing for some people in Ontario to reflect upon the fact that in the recent Quebec elections every riding in the Eastern Town- ships elec ted a liberal member. The Englieh-ipeaking people of Quebec. who are more numerous in the East- ern Townships than almost anywhere else in the Province. stand by the party of progreer. People who read notbine but The Orange Sentinel will perhaps never near of this. The tight between Tett and Roose- velt for the Republican nomination for the Presidency is ooming to close grips. The Republican national con- vention meets at Chicago on the 18th of this month, and as each of the two outstanding contestants claims a ma- jority of the delegates the concluding round of the big fight promisee to be a very lively one. In the meantimle, Wm. J. Bryan says that a progres- sive Democrat can beat either Taft or Roosevelt next November. One day The London Free Press quotes United States opinion opposed to reciprocity as a reason why Cana- dians should be thankful they did not endorse -the trade agreement : the next day it rings the changes on United States speeches in favor of reciprocity which, strangely enough, lead to the same conclusion. But of courier it is The Free Press' business to knock re- ciprocity with any sort of reason or no reason at all. The Duke of Connaught visited Guelph the other day, and The Guelph Herald notes the fact, evidently with some feeling of regret that the crowds did net give His Highness even one hearty cheer. it may be an indication of the Canadian character thst it is seldom • crowd in this country be- comes o-comes wildly enthusiastic over any- thing. An exception should be made in the cars of crowds at hockey matcher, which generally make noise enough. Perhaps it is not altogether • bad sign that Canadians are not easily moved to demonstration of their feelings, and yet sometimes it looks • little bit like churlishness. Rev. How absurd that pr (canton is was demonstrated ipp the Centre Huron case. Inspector Snider of the Ontario Government l.icen l • Depa-tmeot went to Godericb, Loge: her with Oliver Johnston, the l new license inspector for the di,.trict, made an ezamina•iou of all the hotels. Contrary to the wishes of the j majority of the board, in tact the whole of the board and of the inspec i tor, these instructions were carried I out.. By a peculiar coincidence these three licensees who were cut off were all Liberals in politics, and whether Ltd. had anything to do in influencing "Headquarters" to do what was done is a question yet to he decided. That Mr. Raider went to Goderich with in - *tractions in his pocket to ram the Whitney Government's will down the throats of the commissioners there can be no doubt.
