It. took the town oouncil less than halt an hour to transact ite business last Friday evening. The motion for adjournment was made before 8:30 o'clock. AU the members were present ; Mayor Reid in the chair. The first communication read was troth W. J. Towersey, who resigned his position as market clerk and asked that his resignation be accepted ao soon as a satisfactory substitute was secured. Mr. Towersey was ap- pointed to the position of market clerk nearly five years ago. The mat- ter was referred to the market commit- tee with power to act. A petition signed by fifty-seven citi- zens made the following request : "We, the undersigned business then of the town ot0odericb, re+pectfully re- quest that your honorable body will rescind at its meeting to be held on the 3rd inst. the bylaw passed by your council in the month of February last, reducing the number of 'tote! licenses in the town of Goderich from eight to MX, for the following seasons: In our opinion the cutting off of two 'total licenses in this town will not curtail. the sole of liquor but may largely in - craw the pr Alta of the llcenaeholders wbo may still retain their licenses; that in our opinion the hotel accom- modation of this growing town is not more than sufficient to meet the needs of the public." This was made known by Hon. 1V. J. Hanna this morning. "While not handing out a copy of Mr. Sounders report," said the Min- ister, "I may say that the report of the evidence leaves me no alternative but to change the chairman of the commission as well as the inspector. Apart entirely from the inspector's in- tentions in the matter, facts brought out make it clear that his usefulness as an inspector is gone." Patterson's reelgnation is already in the hands of the Minister and will therefore be accepted.
