cid that Engineer Roberts had notified
the sewer ouutractur that his time for
the completion of the contract had
ezpired and that the council expected
hint to carry on the work wore ex-
peditiously and attisfsctorily hence-
forth. The Reeve thought the council
should alto notify the contractor of
the stand taken and a motion was
made to this effect, which was carried.
Tbs Street Watering Question.
The Reeve brought up the matter of
having the street watering done under
the local improvement system during
the cohting eawmrr and be 'advocated
having the macer cent to a committee
to report on it. -He thought that it
should be decided at once whether
Waley or oil was to be used. Deputy
Reeve (:lark said he woe in favor of
having the 'tatter go to a comtriltee,
but at present he felt he ceroid not
agree with the local improvement
system, as he did nut think it was
feasible. The Reeve stated that it bad
been estimated that it would cost a
ratepayer $1 a year for an ordinary
frontage. The 'natter was referred to
the public works committee.
Dep.rty Reeve Clark brought Up the
"natter of making Howe ch 'totes in the
police once. He suggested that the
cello he moved into the bu'euoent, and
that the room thus enlarged should he
fitted up ae a suitable rendezvous for
the firemen. The Reeve thought the
sutgeetion a good one. but eonsidete,I
the place where the cells are now
would be a suitable place for a vault.
The matter was referred to the public
works committee for s report.
Bylaw No. 9, to increase the asses-
enr'H salary, was given its fleet iuid
second readings, and the council then

DR. MEDD ON CHURCH UNION.
Not Convinced That the Step Shedd Be
Taken.
At the forenoon service in Victoria
street Methodist church last Sunday
tbe pastor, Rev. Dr. Medd, spoke on
church union and referred wt leo,gth
to the basis of union. Among other
things he said that at no time mai he
enthusiastic over the queen m of
church union, and he was not now in
favor of it upon the basis submitted.
Nevertbelees be did not wish to deter
any man from voting for it who, un-
der God, telt it his duty so to do. The
question was wide and ler-reaching in
consequences, and should be ap-
proached intelligently prayerfully
and in the fear of Nod. As pastor of
the church his only wish was, by fair
and impeirtlal etatement,todrew atten-
tion to fort alnthings Use basis troutala.
Having done this, every man must
decide for himself how hie hallo' shall
be marked- He then referred to the
km of money and men tbruugh ovee-
Isppiug of the work of abs churches in
many places. Ueioa, he said. is not

He did not think that the answer to
the earioure. prayer. "that they also
may be one," involved organic union
of the churches. It looked for some.
teiog better. it would be a difficult
Mirk to prove 'bat denominationalism
had not been a hlee in:( to the world.
Possibly it bad stimulated the intellec-
tual and spiritual life ut the church 4o
the luting benefit of all mea. Were
all evangelical churches merged into
one national (lomat there was no evi-
dence at hand to show that national
righteousness would increase.
Whether such a church would excel
the denominational churches in Chris-
tian benevolences ur in ago- eisive
evangelism was at bast not 1,•oved.
History hat scant evidence. if any, in
its favor. Indeed. literaiure declared
that Ibe Wesleyan revival was a God-
send to England. If this declaration
of literature Were wrong, were we to
cout•lude that the birth of Wesley was
a calamus % Wesley believed that the
world was his par'ieb, and that the
mission of Methodism was to spread
:scriptural hnlinese over the land, and
them are men today who think that
there is still 0,u'o in the world for
such a basion.
Dt. Medd then referred to several
parag-apps in the printed basis ot
union. Meowing what he believed to be
t heir import and content. In this he
was closely followed by the congrega-
tion. as indeed he was through the
whole discourse.
