SOUTH RENFREW.
The election in South Renfrew
takes place on Tbur.day and hefort
this paper is in the hands of its readers
the result will have been decided.
Confidence is expressed on both eider,,
but it is based on widely different
grounds. The Government supporters
are making great use of the appeal to
cupidity. "We are in power," they
say in effect ; "elect our nominee, Dr.
Malooey, gild the Government will
spend money in the riding on road im-
provemeot and in other ways. Elect
Mr. Graham. the Opposition candidate,
and yott may expect nothing
but the coli shoulder.' it is reported.
101, that a groat died of scary is al-;
ready tn circuist' in the riding for
the persuasion of the electors in a mare
direct way. It is charged also that
threats are being made to office -hold-
en in the riding that if they and their
relatives do not vote for Dr. Maloney
they will lose their positions.
On the other hand the supporter of
Mc. Graham expect the majority of the
electors to stand by the agreement
whereby Mr. McGarry (Conservative)
was to be returned unopposed for the
Provincial House and Mr.(iraham (Lib-
eral) was to reoeive the Federal neat
by acclamation. Though the agree-
ment has been broken, at the behest.
it seems, of North Renfrew men
chiefly, and with the connivance of
Hon. Frank Cochrane sod Hon.
J. D. Reid. it iethe
rank and file of thetive
party will resent the breach of good
faith sod that many of them will at
least refrain from voting. To their
credit be it said, the Conservative
newspapers in the riding, with one
exception -The Arnprior Chronicle -
refuse to countenance the opposition
to Mr. Graham, and The Renfrew
Journal particularly is putting up a
'rtrone fight for fair play to the Op-
position candidate.
The result of the polling on Thurs-
day will show whether the electors of
South Renfrew are more readily
moved by the smell of the "neshpot."
than by a desire to see good faith
maintained in political as well as in
private life.

1t is a curiqus thing, but it is true,
that Toronto, which ie most excited
abnut the regularity of marriage in
the Province of Quebec. is the place in
Oanade. where there ion more Irregu-

else. There are more divorces from
Toronto than from all the rest of
Canada., and there are more cases of
bigamy in Toronto thaw in *11Canada.

be well if there were more of such

F:,ery one of you ought to know
the ••Pickwick Papers," even though
you -hould never turn another page
of Diekene. which would be a vast
pity. But this hook, at least, you
should read, tot the love and the fun.
and the pathos, and the make-believe,
the reality and the adventuring spirit
of Dickens are crowded into its nages.,
which are as cramfull of everlasting
youth as the sun is of shining. You
can't forget it, any more than you can
forget you have bands and feet ; and
in a ws you aren't complete unless
you do know it. Something is mini-

there.
Hot Meet of Them Never Happened.
Niagara Falls Journal.
"I am an old man and have had
many troubles, hut most of them
never happened," a quaint philoso-
pher once observed very truthfully.
Id or young, ask yourself frantly,
bow many of our troubles ever bap -
How many bri have you
n m
alared about which you never
bad to cross at all? This ie worth
thinking about. Of course there are
tr•nubles which do happen, but the
majority of the worries of life are
needless. And even when everything
is dark witbout if there be a
ligbtand a fora* within many of the
sharpest shafts, of misfortune are
blunted and fail to penetrate the
armor of the soul. Of course dull
fatalism is no better than doubt and
deepair; but a serene cheerfulness
nfteti disarms disaster and robs the
cruelest torment of its sting.
Punishment Preventive.
Montreal Star.
The much abused "jury" has re-
rently vindicated in an English trial.
A man, who became afflicted with bad
eyesight std so lost his position.
killed bis child in his despondency.
He pleaded "guilty," and explained
that he feared that hie own character
was inherited hy the child. The judge
insisted that he was insane. But the
jury judged him sane and found him
gutty. He will probably not be
hanged ; but the impression will not
go abroad that despondent men are at
liberty to adorn their funeral pyres
with their helpless. families. Surely
the jury was right in this case. We
are all too fund of finding excuses for
the living when we recognize that the
dead cannot be restored. We should
tbink, however, of the living who may
be protected from similar peril. Pun-
ishment is preventive -not revenge-
ful.
Sheep Industry and Prntectio6.
Weekly Hun.
One member of the sheep breeders'
organizations which met in Toronto last
week is orf the opinion that the chief
essential to tbe promotion of sheep
buch.ndry in Canada is the adoption
of a prohibitory tariff on .11 kinds of
imports provided from foreign or
Australian sheep.
The facts in regard to the United
States no the one hand and to Gnat
Retest!' on the other scarcely sustain
the belief entertained by the member
in question. in the United States
sheep husbandry, like all other lime.
of pp.•oduction, is protected. The Bei-
tieh market, on the other hand, is
freely open to wool and mutton In all
forms as well al to all other lines of
live stock and products of the some
`!till the British sheep industry seems
to be in a more prosperous condition
than is the like indusin the. United
States. The area of Great Retain is
only equal that of the one' State of
Michignn ; and yet (frost Britain has
well over half -00 per cent --of the
nnmher of sheep tri be founi in the
