innovation was tbe presence of ladies

enjoy the ptooeedings as heartily as
the men. The menu was provided 'uy

excellent one. The masts were dunk

Scotch supper were not wentine, the
haggis being brought in and b•rue

Considerable Interest Taken in the

letom present indications a deeper
interest Is taken in the election of an
alderman to fill the position vacated
by W. E. Kelly thou was shown in
December last when all but one of the
members of the council were elected
by acclamation. On Wednesday even-
ing when the hour for receiving nowi-
nations had elapsed Clerk Knox
bad six names to announce a@ pro-
posed candidate@ for the vacant posi-
ticc. They were R. R. Sallows,
Robert Elliott, Robert McLean, W. H.
Robertson, Wm. Wallace and J. J. '
Moser. Robert McLean and Wm.
Wallace were absent, and W. H.
Robertson announced himself as not a
candidate, but R. R. Sellows, Robert
Elliott and J. J. Moser announced
their intention ot rooteeting the seat.
W. H. Robet won was appointed
chairman of the after -meeting and the
crowd which had congregated to the
town hall listened to @bort speeches
from the three candidates and Mayor
Reid sod Reeve Biennial's. The
candidates have until 9 o'clock this
evening to qualify for tha position.
The electfon os to take place on Wed-
nesday, February 7th.

papeAnfort is teing made to unseat
Councillor Vanatter, the Maim being
made that be is disqualified by reason
of the fact that his firm has done
printing fur the town. Mr. V &natter
claims that the law allows him to re-
tain his meet tinder such circumstances.
The attempt to disqualify him is pre-
sumably briog made on behalf of the
Hotelkeeperg Protective A.s.ociation.
[t is understood that the special
committee of the town council well
recommend the cutting off of two
licenses, instead of four as requets{ed
by the Local Option League. The
matter will doubtless come up at the
regular meeting of the council this
week.
