In settling the broad plains of Caned& a Soot had subdued the prairie and the wottotafn. No matter where they looked the Soot shone as a star in tbe firmament and iouud him constellations of rues and daughters to give light to a world otherwise dark. If they were not the joy ot the whole earth, they' were at lest its envy. They were sleeping far apart, in distant China where pioneers of the bigbest laid down tbelr lives. by the shares of the Southern Bees, in our Western nelds. in distant Africa. and their ,raves were the record of a Saxtish triumpb. No wonder that to- night they were proud of their land. [brit tongue, their music. their past history and present proud position. "Tbe Sons of Scotland," "there's nape like us." "The Land We Live In" was bo orad, and Aar. Clifford sang "r Maple Leaf." Rev_ Deo. E. Roes responded. He spoke of the ubiquitous Scot, turnip up everywhere and always occupying the place ot usefulness and honor. eanada the speaker described as the Wrest jewel in the Britteh crown, and he thought it toting that it should be w largely in the possession of the sons of Scotland. It was not two an iwci- drat but a striking and most appro- priate tact, that over the eastern gate- way of llamado stood the name "Nova t''cotla" Mr. Roes spoke of Canada's gre extent and her immense and divers fled mantel wealth, but he remind his bearers that national greetne consisted not in material wealth bu in the integrity of the people. Stabi ity of character, Stability of ideal was neoesary, and Scotsmen, wit their recognized qualities of tboroug ness, of perseverance and industr and faith, could be a great factor i tasking Canaria the best land of all "Three cheers for Cabala," th speaker called in conclusion, and th cneers and a "tiger" were given with will. Tee lAYrd anniversary] of the birth of Robert Patens was oelebrated in en- tbn &.tic style by the Scotsmen of Goderich on 1'bur.day eight of last week. The eslebrstioc took the form of a dinner in the Oddfetk,wa' Hall, at which nearly two hundred people were present. This was the first "Burns nicht" held in Oodrich in a good truly jrelle., and so successful was the event that it is likely to be. come aa annual aRair. The chief diffculty, indeed, which the commit- tee encountered war to provide room Inc all who wlebed to attend. and some actually were turned away because every Available Space war filled. An innovation was tbe presence of ladies •t the dinner. There were a good number present, and they appeared to enjoy the ptooeedings as heartily as the men. The menu was provided 'uy tbe Women's Institute and was an excellent one. The masts were dunk in wafer, but other usual features of a Scotch supper were not wentine, the haggis being brought in and b•rue through the hall by Chieftain Geo. McPbee amid great cheering. Music was furnished by Piper. McDonald and Crsigie and the Blackstone orchestra. Mr. Hunter acted as pias° accom- panist. 1t was tele o'clock when Dr. (tallow took the toast list in .hand, A. D.
