linE NEXT MOVE
WILL BE FOR REDUCTION OF
LIQUOR LICENSES.
Temperance People Will Ask Town
Council to Cut the Number of
Licenses Issued in Goderich to
Four -An Appeal from the Hotel -
keepers' Protective Association.
Though the local option bylaw failed
bya narrow margin on New Year'.
iy; the local license -holden are not
et out of the woods. The large ma-
jority given in favor of the bylaw
(which was defeated only by the three-
fifths requirement+, together with
other circumstances within their
knowledge, convinced the workers for
local prohibition that they should not
allow auother three years to elapse
without making an effort to curb the
liquor traffic in Goderich. They have
decided to go before the town council
with a petition for the reduction of
the number of liquor licenses issued
for this town to four. Nine licenses
are now in effect -eight for hotels and
i,ne for a shop. It will no doubt ne
pointed out by the deputation that
Goderich hoe more licenses in propor-
tion to population then other places
that are sufficiently supplied with
hotel accommodation, and that some of
the licensed places now in existence
can be done away with without injury
to the town in any test -sect.
The council may designate the num-
ber of Ii-enaes to be issued for the
town, but it would remain with the
board of license commissioners to de-
cide which licenses should be cut off.
It is expected that the council will
accede to the request of the prohibi-
tion workers, in part at least, if it
does not fill the whole order fur the
cutting off of five licenses.
A communication from the Hotel -
keepers' Protective Association of
Goderich clan will come before the
town council at its next regular meet-
ing. It contains arequestto the effect
that the council require the town's
chief constable and night-watchman
to do their duty in the enforcement of
the license law. The request is re-
garded as somewhat peculiar. seeing
that nobody but the hntelkeepere
themselves are suspected,of breaking
the law. However, it it is to be taken
as indicatinga desire on the part of a
majority of the hotelkeepres to ob-
serve the law, and to place the discredit
of breaking it upon those of their
number who are not so particular,
the request will probably receive due
.Attention.
At any rate, the new council will
have some interesting business on its
hands.
The Summer Hotel.
The new town council should make
an effort to come to a decision in the
matter of the summer hotel. So far
Mr. Lee has been unable to secure any
definite response to his offer to pile -
chew the hotel. if the council will
not sell. it should say so and allow
Mr. Lee to make his arrangements ac-
cordingly. If it does not want to take
the responsibility of selling the prop-
erty without knowing what the rate-
payers think about it, let it take an
early opportunity of consulting the
ratepayers. The Signal was surprised
that the council did not accept Mr.
Lee's offer in the first place, and so
get rid of a perennial hill of expense,
at the same time putting a few thous-
and dollars in the town treasury.
Some opposition to the sale was ex-
pressed, however, and nothing has
been done.
The public interest coulee in this
way ; Mr. Lee has conducted the
hotel in a satisfactory manner for sev-
eral years. If he is allowed to buy
the piece it is reasonably certain that
he will continue to run it or sell out
to somehrdy else who will. If, on the
other hand, he is not allowed to pur-
chase the place, and draws out and
sells the furniture, it may he impos-
sible to find another tenant. The sale
of the hotel to Mr. Lee seems to be
the most certain way of assuring that
it will continue to be run in a satisfac-
tory manner.
At any rate, merely as a matter of
g ood business procedure, the matter
should be settled with Mr. Lee one
way or another.
Listowel Passes Bylaw.
By a vote of 455 to 4 the ratepayer's
of Listowel have endorsed a proposi-
tion whereby the Andrew Malcolm
Furniture Company of Kincardine is
granted ten years' exemption from
taxation and free water nn assuming
the responsibilities of the Listowel
Furniture Company and undertaking
to work the factory to its full capac-
ity.

atterutun and the men assembled
in the evening to discuss vari-
ous plans for the extension of
church work in the congregation.
Subject to the approval ot the vestry
meeting next Easter several ideas
were adopted. The use of the duplex
envelope and the abolition of pew
rent were two changes that were
favored. The raising of funds for a
new organ and the erection of a new
organ chamber oleo were agreed upon.
The officers of the A. Y. P. A. are to
get in touch with the pastor, Rev. J.
B. Fotberingbam, and arrange for the
imruediate re -commencement of the
regular meetings. It was decided to
make the song service on Raster Sun-
day specially attractive and arrauge-
wents are to be made to have a vested
choir of boys for that occasion.
Last Sunday evening's service in the
Baptist church was a memorable
event. As this announcements
intimated, it 'ilA1 the occasion of the
Young People's anniversary. The
entire service was conducted by the
young people, and the testimony of
all present was that they conducted
themselves admirably. The pa rs
rendered were of an excellent quality,
the tone struck being high and noble.
Matters pertaining to the work of the
society were presented to the audience,
much information being given. The
history of the Baptist Young People's
Union wee well presented by Miss L.
Cameron ; the doings of the local
society for the past year, which was
also its first year, was told by Mies
Vera Murray. Mise Doia Hopkin
in a very able manner presented the
relationship of the Union to the
church. The president, Mrs. J. Pollock,
who presided throughout the whole of
the service, outlined the prospective
work for the coming year. The other
participants in the evening's program
were Mrs. G. Johnston, who gave the
Scripture lesson ; Mise Eva Keene,
reeding ; Miss H. McColl, solo ; Mr.
and Mrs. Pollock, duet. The success
of the evening amply repaid the effort
put forth and be church is already
asking for another such sedvice.
