CONSERVATIVES NOMINATE
We Joseph ENpit as The Camas
for Centre Here:.
170.- conservative convention Tbt
Centre Huron was held at Msafortb
this atter0000, when a caedidats was
placed an the Held foe the coming elec-
tion to the Provierial Hoare.
Four names were placed before the
con venlion : David (action and
Jaqhn Raosford, of Clinton : Robert
McLean and Rev. Joseph Elliott, of
Oodericb. Mr. ltansford and Mr;
McLean withdrew and a ballot was
taken to decide between Mesas. RI-
liott and llantelon. The Ooderich
man won.
M. Broderick, of Seatorth, arid Win.
Campbell, of Goderich, were re-elected
president and secretary. respectively,
of the Centre Huron Association.
Jas. Bowman, Y.P. for East Huron,
was present sad addressed the conven-
tion.
The Grand Jury Presentment.
The following presentment was
, handed in by the grand jury at the
Huron assize. last week :
To Elia Lordship Mr. Justice Riddell
The furors for Our lord the King
respectfully present as follows :
, We examined tb ' court house, reg-
istry office, gaol and hoose of refuge.
and wish to state that we found these
buildings, in all departments, clean
and apparently well kept.
' After careful examination, we con-
' elude that the heating, ventilation.
water supply and sanitary arrange-
ments in each building are fairly
Rood. We think a building should be
erected at the 'gird in which' to store
furl, and not leave it exposed in the
open. We found three male inmates
iu the gaol. Thomas Wall appears
harmless:. charged as being insane.
Joseph Smeltzer. committed as a va-
grant. This party has been kept in
the house of refuge fur the past five
years, and was recently removed to
the gaol, because he is an epileptic
:tad dangerous to be allowed to mingle
with the inmates of the hduse of ref-
uge. C. W. Cross is awaiting his trial
on a charge of larceny.
We visited the house of refuge,
c Which is situated near the town of
Clinton. This is an institution or
borne fot the care of the indigent
aged and friendless people of this
county. We were careful in our ex-
amination, and ftom garret to cellar we
are satisfied with its appearance.
Our impression is that it is a marvel
bow an institution, providing for
eighty-five inmates, most of whom
are aged and almost helpless, can be
kept so clean, and the atmosphere
j throughout the building so pure.
The sleeping (apartments, in both
the gaol and the house of refuge, seem
to be particularly well kept.
The farm of forty-seven acres on
which the house of refuge is situated
is well cultivated, and the outbuild-
ings are tidy and sufficient..
We also made inquiry and i
Lion of schools and bosplta Is. T'he
new school in (ioderiob has been oc-
cupied for about a year. We wish to
say that ft was a source of pleasure'
and instruction to visit the different
departments in this building.
The registry oftlee seems comfort-
able, and everything appears tidy and
well kept. Shrubbery and Rowerbede
make the grounds around this build-
ing particularly attractive.
Having related to Your Lordship
what your grand jurors have done in
the performance of their duties, they
beg to express their gratitude to the
officials of the various institutions far
their courtesy in assisting us in our
inspection.
And we have to thank Your Lord-
ship for your courtesy, and your ad-
dress to us, which wan+ wimple and
comprehensive.
All of which is respectfully submit-
ted.
