The ba r and tea given by the
Iadiee au diary of the Y. M. C. A. in
Oddfello ei Hall last Thursday after-
noon and evening was a decided sue-
r -rasa It was most gratifying to the
ladies to have their efforts too thorough-
ly appreciated and patronized. In addi-
tion to the serving of tea bimetal young
Ladies conducted a prettily decorated
candy booth and were handsomely re-
warded for their efforts. Home-made
bread and cakes and fancywork also
were on sale. The total proceeds
amounted to nearly $100and will bedo-
nated to the cause of the Boy800ute,
The ladies wish to thank all those who

Changes in Bank Management.
A change is being made this week
In the management of the Sterling
Bank here. Mr. B. Walker. who bas
been in charge of the local branch for
some months, and who has looked
after the Bank's interests ably and
successfully, is succeeded by Mr.
Andrew Porter, who has been in
charge of the Dungannon office. Mr.
Porter is succeeded at Dungannon by
Mr. Wm. Beattie, late manager of the
Varna and Hayfield agencies, which
are now placed in charge ot Mr. A. E.
H. Jackson, who has been accountant
of the Orangeville branch. The new
manager of the Goderich branch re-
quires no introduction to the people
of Goderich, who have known Mr.
Porter well :end favorably for many
years. In his charge the (Stetting
Bank will continue to be a popular
and well-managed institution. Mr.
Walker returns to Toronto for the
preeent.
The Late Amos Marriott.
The Stratford Beacon snakes tbe fol-
lowing reference to the death of Amos
Marriott, father of John Marriott. of
this town :
One by one the pioneer settlers of
Perth county are being called to their
reward. Another was added fo the
list on Tuesday, September 19th, when
Mr. Amor Marriott, lot 7, base line,
Blanchard, crossed the divide, at the
adyantled age of eighty-two years.
The late Mr. Marriott carne to Blain -
shard from ' or•kshire, England, when
quite a young titan, and hewed out for
himself a home in the bush. Here he
had served on the t.wnship council.
and was a man of exemplary cbar-
acter, a member of the Methodist
church, and highly esteemed by a
large circle of friends and neighbors..
who turned out in large numbers on
Sunday. September 24th. to pay a last
tribute of respect te, his memory. In-
terment was made in Kirkton ceme-
tery. Be -aides his aged widow, whose
maiden name was Jane Thompson, a
family of six daughters and three sons
survive. They are : Mrs. Alex. Jame-
son, base line; Mrs. Henry E. Switzer.

At the meeting of the executive
commiteee of the Huron County Rifle
League held at. Carlow on Friday.
Septemh sr '22nd, the following reso-
lutions were passed : That the fall
shoot be held itt the Whitechurch
ranges on Friday, October 27th. eho.ot-
iog to commene•e at 9 a.m. Tbat the
number of rounds at each range be
five and a lighter. Ranges, df J) yards
and 500 yards. That the prizes
amounting to about $23.50 be awarded
to thoee.baving beet aggregate scorer,
and that about $5 he set aside for tyros.

Death of Mrs. Hostess
After • lingering illne.. of several
months, lane Henderson, wife of the
late Thos. J. Polley, passed away at her
home, Bast street, Oodericb, on Tues-
day of this week. She was fifty-seven
years of age and is survived by • fam-
ily of one son and two daughters :
Hugh H. and Mies Annie, at horse,
and Miss Mary. in attendance at the -
Normal School, London. The de-
ceased had been a resident of Oode-
rieb for a number of years, moving in-
to town from Dungannon nearly fif-
teen years ago. Mr. Polley died over
six years ago. The funeral took place
at 1 o'clock today 10 Dungannon cem-
etery. Rev. Dr. Medd conducted ser-
vices at the house and graveside.
The pallbearers were 0. M. Elliott,
Thos. Burrows, W. J. Morrow, Thos.
Hawkins, Jas. Btrongb and Ben.
Graham. The bereaved family have
the heartfelt sympathy of the com-
munity in the doss which they have
sustained.
Public School Matters.
At the meeting of the public school
board on Monday evening, it was
decided to Promote Miss 4harman
from the poettion of vice-principal of
Central school to that of principal A,
committee, consisting of Dr. Turnbull,
Dr. Galley/ and A. D. McLean, w•a
appointed to consider the advisability
of introducing dental inspection in the
schools. The principal's report
showed the total number of boys on
the roll to he 303, and the total num-
ber of girls 289iwith an average attend-
ance of 524. The secretary a report
showed the total amcunt of money
paid out during tieptember to be, $1-
4.50,12. The amount received from the
town of Goderich during the month
was $1,437,44. A letter from Prof.
Hutt. of the Ontario Agricultural Col-
lege, Guelph. was read.The writer
intimated that he was peeper log a lay-
out of the Victoria school grounds for
the board's use in beautifying the
school premises.
Lecture November 1st.
The work of the Muskoka Free Hos-
pital for Consumptives will again be
brought to the attention of the people
of Goderich in a lecture to be de-
livered by Jos- B. Watson. field secre
tary of the National Sanatorium Asso-
ciation. in the Temperance Hall on
Wednesday. November 1st. Mr.
Watson'. topic is one that claims the
careful interest of aB people who de-
sire healthful conditions thoroughly
established in our country, MedieaI
authorities state that one person in
ten is doomed to die of consumption.
1 his is a dreadful waste of life and it
is the aim of t hose who are fighting
"tbe white plague- to impress upon
people everywhere the extreme urg-
ency for the adoption of such meas-
ures as will stop the spread of the di.
ease. There should he a large tnanont
at Mr. Watson's lecture. Dr. Mack-
lin has consented to take the chair.

A Train of New Freight Cars.
An event of unusual interest to
those engaged in the grain business at
Goderirh was the loading and shipping
of twenty-one new C. P. R. cars with
new grain at the Goderich elevator
last Friday. 7'he grain we, wheat
and oats of the 1911 Western crop and
was received byboat only a few days
before from ort Arthur and Fort
Willie's). The car, had never been
used before. having been brought here
from Detroit. where they were mantl-
factured. The train, which left here
on Friday, was in charge of Conductor
Wallace. of London : Engineer Bow-
lan was at the lever, while Fireman
Turnbull looked after the firebox.
The amount of grain on the train was
clime to 35,000 bushels and the aggre-
gate freight chnrge was $1,300. The
grain was for use in the local milling
trade and was destined for Tillscnburg,
Lindsay, Tharnld, Peterlaro' and
other pointe. Tbia is only one ship-
ment which goes to indicate the large
trade which the Goderich Elevat+,r k
Transit Co. enjoys in catering to the
Ontario milling trade. Some excel-

Miller. of Allan, Sask.. a son of Mrs.
R. R. Miller. of St. Helena and a G.
C. I. old boy : A very pretty borne
wedding took place on Wedneeedav
evening at the residence of W. J.
Clark, brother of the hride, when Mie.
Wilma Mary t W innie), youngest
daughter of Mrs. M. E. ('lark. Mete
ford, Ont., was married to John Rob-
ert Miller. a prosperous young mer-
chant ot Allan, Sask. The ceremony
was performed by Rev. S. C. Wright
of Emo, the bride and groom being
unattended. the wedding march being
played by Mies Mary Scott. A num-
ber of intimate young friends of the
happy couple also were in attendan^e
to see them safely through the ordeal.
A sumptuous luncheon repast was
served by Mrs. W. J. ('lark and •t
pleasant evening spent, after which
Mr. and Mrs. Miller -left for their fut-
ure home on the Winnipeg express.
The presents received were very num-
erous and emitly, testifying to the high
esteem in which the young couple is
held. The groom'. present to tbe
bride was a magnifiesent Heintstnan
piano and to Miss Mary geott a beaut-
iful pearl broods. The bride was
handsomely attired in a white silk
voile trimmed with embroidered white
silk lace and hosertion with a corsage
bouquet of flowers, lily of the valley
and maidenhair tern The travellimi
snit was of alice blue in visible plaid
