IN GREAT PERIL.
EXPERIENCES OF SURVIVORS OF
NORTHERN ONTARIO FIRE.
Mn. Wm. Young and Her Family Lose

at Cochrane -W. J. Trethewer's
Close Shave in the Fire at South
Porcupine.
The accounts of the terrible tires in
the Porcupine and Cochrane districts
of Nortbern Ootavio have been read
itb a great deal of interest and con-
siderable anxiety. The them estimates
of the number of deaths have, fortun-
ately, been found to he exaggerated,
and the latest reports put the total
death list at seventy. Most' of the
fatalities were in the Porcupine dis-
trict Measuree for the relief of the
people rendered destitute by the ds -
ester were promptly taken. and with
indomitable courage the husiOess igen
of the devaeiated towns ate cowmeoc-
ing to rebuild their shattered for-
tune..
The congregation of Knox church,
Godericb, is arrangiog to send relief in
the way of clothing, bedding, etc. It
is hoped that:a carload will be ready
for ehipmebt by the flat week of

Mrs. Young's Story of the Fire.
Mrs. William Young, who, as we
mentioned kat wrt+k, war returning
from thchraae, arrived oo Thursday
uight at the home of her father, Alex.
Surfing, Cambria ro.ui. She was
much exhausted after her terrible ex-
perience
xperience fn tbe fire, but has since re-
covered much of ben normal strength.
To a representative of The Signal
Mrs. Young gave a graphic account of.
the fires* it effected ber and her fam-
ily.
Mr. and Mrs. Young, their daugh-
ters Tena and Clara and their son
Colin were living et Cochrane in a
house quite close to the lake. Their
son Murray was in en engineers camp
on the line of the National Transcon-
tinental Railway, about ten miles oat
of Cochrane. Oat Tuesdaymorning of
last week tote people in o^beane no-
ticed the dense smoke arising from
forest flies in ; southwesterly direc-
tion front the "lawn. This was about

ld seemingly die out fa one
place and reappear in another. A
terrific gale was blowing from the
direction of the fire and by noon tire
possibility of danger to the town was
being generally du -seemed. By 1:30 or
2 o'clock those in the business part of
the town were very anxious and were
guarding their properties to prevent
their taking fire from the flying em-
bers. The flames, however, soon took
hold of the town and began to sweep it
from end to end. The Young dwelling
with a few others, including the Ro-
ttman Catholic church and rectory,
were in • part of the town somewhat
detached from the rest. Such pre-
cautions as were possible were taken,
but little could be done except to hope
for tbe best. Between 3 and 4 o'clock
the fire caught in the bush near the
house and the smoke became very
dense. Mr. Young cried. "Run for
the lake," and in a few minutes there
was a group of twentyor so gathered
by the water side. he women and
children huddled closely together,
crouching as low as passible, and
blankets and quilts were thrown over
tbem,•and Mr. Young and the other
men, including the young priest, Father
GaskeU, keptthrowing water over
them. The Catholic church and the
Priest's house, just a few feet from the
eke. caught firs and until they burned
down the little group huddled up
at the edge of the lake we* in great
danger. As it was, their clothing
was burned in spots. The worst part
of the fire lasted about twenty min-
utes. "Our party came out safely,"
said Mrs. Young. "but a few minutes
more would bare finished us." A dog
only a few yards away from them
tune suffocated by the dense smoke.
The little group had to remain beside
the lake for an hour and • half. At
other points along the lake shore were
similar groups 'reeking safety from
the greedy'lamet.
When they went taws to their
home, or where their home had been,
the Youngs found that everything
had hewn burned. Only a few build -
logs in the town escaped. Rather
oddly. the Imperial Ban one of the
buildings that were not burned, was a
frame structure. while several prick
beiildings were destroyed. Most of
tlw buildings, of course. were of wood.

The only deaths Mit. Young heard
of before she left ('ocbr.ne were those

e e have einem told of another death.

Trethewey, a Goderich young man,
and a.ury.vor of the awful holocaust
which visited Mouth Porcupine on
Tuesday of last week.
Mr. 'retbewey had been in the
North country eines last April and
was ID change of the mining opera-
tions on the James property, three
and a -halt miles soutb of South Por
cupine. On the afternoon of July 11th
fire was seep at a distance. but es the
wind was in a different direction it
was thought they would escape the
conflagration. About 2 o'clock the
danger was inevitable and steps were
at 00Ce tate0 to protect the buildings.
Three of the gang were asoaned to
the work of protecting the shafts,
while the remaining five did their best
to guard tile houses from the ap-
proaching Hames. They were terribly
handicapped in their work by the lan
of water, as they were three miles
from the nearest lake or river. What
little water they had was in the well,
where five of 'beat -Mr. Trethewey,
the cook and three Poles -were forced,
AS a last resort, to take shelter in
order to save themeelvee from de-
struction.
It is difficult to determine just how
long they fought for their lives. The
Hawes and smoke. driven by a sixty -
mile gale. made their sufferings most
intense. .For probably an hour and a-
balf thestood in the well, pouring
water over tbemrelyes as they gasped
for breath and were almost choked by
the dense smoke which hovered over
them. To add to their trouble the
three Poles made frequentattempta to
lie down in the water and thus pro-
cure a monopoly of their only so'ltrce
of relief wbile the fire lasted. The
cook, a Scotchmao, was described by
Mr. Trethewey as "one wbo was all
there until t e trouble was over, and
then The other three
mem together with is.
straggler trout another camp, were more
euc^eesful in finding a place of shelter,
having found a slanting shaft where
they had considerable water to aid in
securing comfort.
About d o'clock the journey to South
Porcupine was commenced, • rather
difficult teak, as the changed aspect of
everything made it exceedingly dif-
ficult to locate the trail. Oo the way
they found tree of Adams, the
hootk,eper for the hiladelphi. Min-
ing Cowpaay. Reaching the site of
the town, which they found complete-
ly devastated, they proceeds d+()Golden
City, two miles farther and at the
other end of the lake, where they se-
cured medical attendance.
Mr. Trethewey suffered severely
from his eyes and his chest internally
caused him much pain. The phy.ician
who attended him described hie eyes
as the wont, with the exception of
two case., that he had seen. He woe
only slightly burned.
Mr. Trethewey is a son of T. H. Tre-
thewey, Britannia road. He arrived
in town last 1a.urd$y evening and
will spend a couple of weeks in tiode-
rich. He does not expect to return to
Porcupine at present
Copies of The Porcupine Press and
The Haileyburian (both of July 15)
have been received by The Signal from
C. W. Feick, a former Goderich boy
now at. Haiieybury. These papers
contain accounts of the great tire.
EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS.
Rev. Geo. E. Roes Deprecates the Strict-
ly Utilitarian Idea.
In his sermon at Knox church last
8u'.d.y evening Rev. Geo. E. Roes
deplored the undue share of attention
prod to what are somewhat falsely
called the "practical" things of life.
His text was from the fourteenth
chapter of Mark, the incident of Mary •
and the alabaster box of ointment.
A reference to the utilitarian idea in
education was as follows :
"Life today is intensely practical.
We are rapidly developing along utili-
tarian lines. With our unlimited
storehouse of natural resources we are
becoming engrossed in a ceaseless ef-
fort to achieve, W get, to have, to do
things. rime for thought and reflec-
tion is crowded out. The standard of
our public education is criticised ae
not being sufficiently utilitarian and
we are plaloly told by many that such
studies as classics and literature and
even history should have no place in
our public schools and Collegiate in-
stitutes because they are of 'no use.
God forbid that the educational stand-
ard of our country ebould ever drop
to the mean level of the strictly utili-
tarian. We need the reminder that
'man shall not live by bread alone.'
No person can claim to have a liberal
education without some mental dis-
cipline in classical and literary studies
not directly useful. pod these may
well be numbered among the most
useful, for attention to them and tin
dred subject* gives; glow and tone to
life, and arcade the Booing men and
warden of our nation a clearer vision
of the real and true."_
