MR. MACKAY'S TOUR.
TRADE AGREEMENT EXPLAINED
TO T HOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.
Series of Meetings Extending Over
Three Weeks, Concluding $t (iods-
r.ch, Gives Many Ontario Electors
a Clearer View of the Reciprocity
Pact.
The Olobe says:
Hoe. A. G. MacKay addressed on
Saturday at Ooderich the clueing
meeting of a tour that extended over
three weeks, is which time the leader
of the Opposition discussed reciprocity
in over a route of places, from King-
ston in the cell w Windsor in 'the
ur-
pose : it brought the Liberal lee tour served a aderld in-
to close touch with the people of the
Province, and it gave to thousands of
farmers and townspeople e. clearer
view of what the reciprocity agree-
,nent ie mud what U will mean, not
only- to agIo ultuIr, but W the country
et large.
Farmers Are Interested.
Perhaps the wort interesting feature
of the set les of tuewtings mss the tre-
mendous interest taken in the reci-
pi„city titivation, despite the fact that
an election i• not in program. in the
country districta the halls welt.
always crowded, and it waa a coonnotl
thing for farmers to drive fifteen and
twenty miles to beat the speakers.
The night of the Straffordville meet-
ing in Elgin county the wain came
"down in torrentsand
nd hthe toroad.
halle
in bad ',taupe,',taupe,)'r
war crowded. The farmers have read
e great deal about reciprocity in the
newspapers and various pamphlets
sent abroad. but the opportunity- of
hearing reciprocity discussed by a
speaker a• thorougbly grounded in toe
subject ere Hon. Mr. !MacKay
acKruve attracted
that
to the meetings every fa
could conveniently get these.
What Will the Falmer Do i
The lesson of the score of meetinka
held by Hon. A. 0. MacKay in the
past three weeks is that- the fat tier
has just about wade up his mind ; he
has decided to "give reciprocity a
chance. Since the Conservative
members et Ottawa awoke to the real-
ization that hysteria and flag-waving
were making the opposition to the re-
ciprocity •grt•ement somewhat ridicu-
lous, and came suddenly to earth. the
fanners have been deluged with
"boiler -plate" pamphlets attacking re•
ciprocity. They have been told that
their home market is going to be
spoiled, that American products are
going to flow over the boundaty in
great quantities. these pawpbleta
have given the party -bound individual
a chance to make a show of justifying
bis position, but the average farmer,
remembering that the Government en-
tered int() the present agreement as a
concession to the men who sent tbeir
great delegation up Capital Hill. and
contrasting prices of farm products on
both sides ot the boundary line. is not
being convinced.
Little Oppositiou Expressed.
Resolutions endorsing reciprocity
were introduced at practi-ally every
meeting held in the three weeks. At
one meeting }beer men declared
against the agreement, at several
others one or two were opposed. but
in a majority not one farmer stood up
to vote against endoteing the pact.
The significance of this is apparent
when it a remeiuloved that in all o'
voters ; but you don't flud The News
doing that: It does not even black -
lett,' the feet that in Montreal, the
headquarters of the anti -reciprocity
league, organized labor her over -
