at Attrill's - Negotiations
Progress for Purchase of
Property for Permanent
Site.
The June training camp for the
Western Ontario military district will
be held at Goderich next June. Word .
to this effect was received by Mayor
Cameron yesterday.
The camp will be held at AttrIU'ti
and arrangements will he made at
once to provide the necessary facilities
and accommodations.
At the same time The Signal is able
to state that negotiations for the pur-
chase of the Attrill property by the
Government. with a view to making
it the permanent r•manent site of the training
camp tor Western Ontario, are wak-
ing eatisfactory progress.
Mayor Cameron has peen very active
in pressing upon the Militia De-
parunent the advantages of the
location available here kr the pur-
poses of a permanent camp. He has
been able to present to the Govern-
ment the almost unanimous expression
of the offices of the district in favor of
Goderich, and the visits which Col.
Hodgins, D. O. C., made to the At -
trill place evidently impressed him
with the advantages of this site, if
the permanent camp is secured for
Guderich, it will be much larger tbaa
the cacnp held here timer years ago.
In Inc meantime the people ofYsorle-
rich can look forward to entertaisiog
a large number of the boys in red
about two months from now. Tbe
dates announced are from June 19th
to June 3Utb.

of ale and a bottle or two of sherry
was the limit in that line. In cases of
emergency I was greatly assisted by

docket,.
Money was plentiful in those days.
as 1 here known my receipts to
amount to over five bonds el dollars in
about a week. It was also quite com-
mon fur judges and members of the
Lair to incur bills of forty or fifty dol-

Jurymen, witnesses, plaintiffs and de-
fendants all seemed to have an abun-

It may be in order to- remark that.
the habits of the people at the time h

THE ASSIZES.
Next Wimiki Court Will Be an impor-

The publicity given the alleged con-
fession of Edward Jardine in connec-
tion with the death of Lizzie Ander-
son, together with a latet report that
the prisoner was in failing health. has
done much to re -awaken interest in the
awful tragedy and the trial of the ac -
cubed will be the means of attracting
large numbers to the sittings of the
spring sasizes, which open in Godetich
on Tuesday next at 1 o clock.
The statement made in a Toronto
paper that Saturday to the effect that
Jardine had lost onsiderable flesh
within the last §two weeks is not cred-
ited by any person having a knowl-
edge of the facts. If be appears hag-
gard when brought into court, this
condition may be attributed to his six
months' close confinement, but it is
understood that physically he has im-
proved during his stay at Castle Grif-
fin. Tbe trial promises to be a long
one. Aa many es sixty-six witneeeep
have been subpoenaed to appear and
give evidence for the prosecution
alone. It is not known, definitely,
what the nature of the defence will he.
9,r Gienholme Falconbridge, chief jus-
tice of the Kings' Ben.'h, will be the
presiding judge.
it is the general belief that the trial
of George Vanstone, on the charge of
murdering bis five-year-old son. John'
Freddie, will be brief and that the
plea of the defence will be insanity.
in addition to these two criminal
cases six civil cases have been enter•M,
to he tried by a jury and there are
three non jury cases. The jury canes
are as follows :
Campbell vs. Bissonnette et al. -An
action on a promissory note. Glad -
man & Stanhury (Exeter) for plain-
tiffs : Proudfoot, Hays & Killoran for
defendants.
Bird vs. Logan. -An action for ma-
licious prosecution. L. E. Dancey for
plaintiff • Proudfoot, Hays & Killoran
for defendant.
Stothen ve, Taylor. -An action to
recover the price of a gr'otiery stock.
Proudfoot, Hays k Killoran for plain-
tiff ; Dudley Holmes (Wingham I for
defendant.
The Robert Bell Engine & Thresher
Co. vs. Kimble. -An action to recover
the price of a threshing outfit. R. 8.
Hays ('leaforth) for plaintiffs; M. K.
(Ja-neron (Bt. Thomas) for defendants.
The Guy O. Major Co. vs. Turner. -
An action entered on account of the
non-delivery of *quantity of flat reed.
