RECIPROCITY
AND HORSES.
WHAT A VETERAN HORSEMAN
SAYS UN THE SUBJECT.
A. M. Polley States that the Opening
of the United States Market Will
ete the Salvation of the Ontario
Horse -raising industry -Western
Provinces Are Beginning to Raise
Horses for Themselves.
One of the best-known naen in the
Dome Welbeee In We -tern Onto/lei Is
A. M. Pollsa of Gelerich. who has
been at it for fifty ) ears. Mr. Polley
shipped Lee lisea...e.arioal of horse.
t hat ever 111MtAisigiarich, away back at
the time of the civil war in the United
States. 'I'bi, earload went to New
York State. Three was a good mer-
ket for Centel All horses In the United
States et that ticue; it was during the
Period of the old reciprocity treaty.
Me. Polley Is naturally touch inter-
ceded in the premed discussion upon
reciprocity, especially as to the man-
ner in which 4, is likely to affect tbe
horse -raising industry. He believe.;
that a process is going on in Canada
eimilar to that which has already
taktn place 41 the States. For many
years horses raised in the Eastern
Suttee were shipped -to tbe farmers rf
the West. telt after the "war the West
itself began to rale. horses exten-
sively. and 01)W for many yeare the
Western States have been shipping
horses to the Eaatern markets.
The same thing, Me Polley says, is
happeninst in Camelia. Ontario deal-
ers+ have had is good mai ket in the
Western Provinces for some year.;
hut tbey are beginning to mite horses
themseives out West, and especially
Southern Manitoba is breeding enme
fine horses. Where they can he, their
horses run the ranges the year round.
as they can do in some parte of the
%Veto they can nitre horoies more
cheaply than we can in I Moires and
they are already doing 4, to rome ex-
tent. and will no doubt fro on increos-
ing their outaaut. This means that,
with the heavy freight charges to be
paid. the Western market will no
longer be of the seine value as in the
past to the Eastern dealers ; in fact.
Mr. Polley ear, the Vancouver met --
het. is now really the only first-rate
market in Western Canada. end it is
too far away.
The opening of the market of the
&Worn State.. however, will prove
the salvation of the horse -raising In-
dust' y In this Province. From New
York, Boston, Philadelphia and other
centree in the States will come a con -
*tent demand fcr horses of the kind
that Ontario breeds. end onr horse-
men will get Piet Ile good inhere with-
out the trouble and expense involved
in shipping to a far distant market.
Polley in his t one has shipped a
good many borma into the State* in
the face of the duty, and with thie
duty token off there vented he a mai-
nificent merket tight at their very
doors for the horwebreedere of
Obtario. Mr. Polley believe* free en-

thing for Onterio, and be slays that
the reciprocity agreememt, en far am
