postotflce here in tioderich by one mill order house alone.
These catalogues each weigh '27 ounces. This means that in the
neighborhood of 1,500 cppies have been dintl•ihuted. from our
postoftice. It costs this mail order house It cents postage on
every catalogue, And at a very low estimate it would cost them
20 cents for the cuts, paper and printing of each catalogue. This

1,500 catalogues would cost.this company $t'.(fJ in cash.
Isn't that an enormous milount to spend in advertising tot
this town alone This, too, is only for the fall and winter cata-
logue. Beside this out comes the Christmas number, the Jauu-
_ary sale number, the spring and summer catalogue. making a
safe estimate that this company spends about $1,1:01 in adver,
tieing through catalogues for Goderich alone.
Now, the are pleased to say that not ane person in ten ods

Now, let us figure ten catalogues at 40 cents each cost $4.110.
Then figure it out for yourself -this company ,oust get this $1.01)

they are making any profit for themselves. Supposing the
average order you send to them is 4110,110, it would be necessary
for them to have 40 per cent. profit to pay for their advertising
alone.
These figures will no doubt interest and probably amaze you.

big corporations.

Our answer is, in good-sized profits on the goods you order from
then(. Of course they are getting a good pr.,fJt,,and 011 some
tines an enormous pio8t. Th ey must have it to pay for this ex
travagant outlay of money in advertising.
Who is helping to pay this $0110 ? it is the one out of ten
that is doing it. But we don't know if we eau blame you so
very much after all : you were doinglt because you felt that you
could send your order away and sive money by doing so. Of
course that was the reason,otherwise you would have spent'
t bat money- in town. We know, you would be loyal enough to
do that. We have faith in your -doing this, otherwise we would
not spend the time to take the *natter up with you.
Now, then, when we tell you that we' can give you as good
value right at house you have some doubts about it. How can
we prove it to you ? This me have determined to do, and we are
not going to stop until we do it.
We have digested the pages of these catalogues. We have
done more : we have investigated their so-called special values.
and have come to the conclusion that we can give you is goo"
value and in some (totes better values right here in Goderich
every day in the year in comparison with what they ate offering
as special values in their catalogues.

tober. The first prizes will be ten watches, one to be given to
the girl and the other to the boy bringing the greatest number
of catalogues. Second prizes of a0 cents in cash each will be
given to the boy and girl bringing in the next greatest number.
Please notice that the period of the corfpetition is extended and
will dose Saturday, October 1st, instead of September 24th, a
