Alfalfa especially is remarkably fine.

da May btli, the Women's institute
held it* regular monthlymeeting at
the residence of Miss ily McKay,
Lake Shore, A large number at-
tended and a gond program was ren-
dered, Mrs. J. T. Griffin read a paper
on "Housecleaning" and Miss Anne
McGregor one on "The Evils of Fault-
finding." There were alio several
musical selections, solos and a read-
mit by Mrs, Beckett. A number of
new members were added to the roll.
This branch although in its infancy
hae a good membership and tbe ladies
are much interested in the work.
The next meeting will be held at Mn.
Robert McDonald's on Wednesday,
June 2nd. A cordial invitation is ex•
homed to the ladies of the neighbor -

Improvements are under way at the
church. Harry Beadle, of Auburn,
has a contract for painting the out-
side of the church ; the .beds are
being reshinglyd, and things gen-
erally are being .brightened up
The schools close today end will not
reopen until Tuesday. The teachers
will he away tomorrow, we presume,
to attend the convention at Exeter.

a Tile LATE Max. KisnaWRI.L.-The
funeral of the late Mr.. Kingswell,
which took place last Thursday, was
well attended. Mrs. Kingswell was
quite young, not being thirty years of
age. The funeral took place from the
residence of her father, Joseph Coot,
on the Point road, and the service*
were conducted by Rev. W. Conway,
pastor of Nile Methodist rhumb. The
deceased suffered much all winter, the
doctors not being able to Afford relief.
Bare WARD WEATHER. The wintry
weather we have bed lately is making
'tome people feel rather disconsolate
and inclined to hang out the flag of
distress ; but there Is no use in feelipg
like that, Inc slimmer and winter,
'teed time and harvest are promised us
and will continue to come in regular

chopper and making other imprnve-
melit.s in Mich. Pfriunnrr'a mill left
this morning after the work had been
tested. The new chopper has a capac-
ity ot forty bushels of grain per hour
and customers cart now have their
grain chopped while they wait. This
linproveutent will be much appre-
ciated by orae fanners now that there
are so many stall -fed cattle in this
neighborhood.

Mrs. John Pickering, after an illness
extending over a year. The deceased
wise highly rsteerihed in the commun-
ity and will be sorely mimed by many
friends. She was kin' in Ayrshire,
Scotland, July 27th, IN13. Atter coin-
ing to Canada in 1814 she lived for
mune years with her brother, John
Murdoch, near Lucknow, and was
married in his home to her now sur-
viving husband in 1812. After their
marriage Mr. and Mrs. Pickering
moved to their new home, where they
had ever since resided. She was a
member of. Hope -Methodist. church.
Besides her husband.. two •roue and
four daughters are left to mourn her.
('he sons are John M., of Ashfield, and
James, of Brantford, and the daugh-
ters arae' Mts. Leaarlu of Lucknow
Mrs. Me(luire, of Huron, and the
Misses Etta and Margaret, at home.
There are also two brothers -Peter
Murdoch, of Portage la l'rairie, and
Steele, of Lurknow. The remains
were followed to their 111141 reefing
place in Hope cemetery by $ large
concourse of sorrowing relatives and

or sponge cake crumbs which have
