THE SIGNAL : GODERIOR. ONTARIO
&FINE OPERATING ROOM.
Splendid improvement in Facilities
at Alexandra Hospital.
Although a visit to the operating
room of a hospital is not usually
counted among the pleasures of life, it
was a matter of sante gratification to
a representative of The Signal upon a
recent visit to Alexandra hospital to
note the improvement* which have
lately been made in the operating
room of that institution and to learn
that in this respect, as in others, our
local hospital is providing facilities
for the treatment of patients in the
most efficient and approved manner.
The operating ronin has, indeed
complete and beautiful little hospital
at their disposal. I trust that they
will never test content until they
have it regularly filled to capacity, to-
gether.with the earoapective addition."

TO APPOINT ENGINEER.
Municipalities, Taking Action to Pro-
tect Tbeir Interests,
A special meeting of the town coun-
cil war held on Friday evening last to
consider the question of taking action
in the appointment of an engineer by
the municipalities interested to make
independent estimates of the value of
the work done on the electric railway.
As matters are at present theengineer
of the railway company makes the
progress estimates. These are sub-
mitted to the Toronto General Trusts
Corporation, and on the basis of these
estimates the money from the sale of
the municipalleoguarentted .honda is
paid out to the contractors. This, it
u felt. does not safeguard the muol.
cipalities, as progress estimates might
be made out for larger amounts than
proper and the municip•litiee might
find themselves in the position of bay-
ing to take over a partially completed
railway as their only security for a
large bond issue.
Ali tbe member, n( the council were
present at the meeting on Friday and
it was decided unanimously to ap-
point a committee of Mayor Macklin,
Reeve Gall ow and CouncillorsCraigie,
Humber and Munningr (who were
members of last year a council) to
meet representatives of the other
municipalities onThnreday. May
Jath, o discuss the on,
of an
engineer. This motion WAS made by
Councillors Manning. and Humber.
It was also decided to recommend the
appointment of J. Grant McGregor as
the engineer. Mr. McGregor has
been written to in the matter and in-
timated that his charge would be $10
a day for the work and that two
weeks • month would probably be
sufficient for the work, It woe felt
that if an engineer were to be ap-
pointed at all action must be taken at
once, as the railway company was
making heavy outlay' for rails, etc.,
and a large part of the expenditure
was likely to he Inatle in the near
future. It was also deckled to write
to the Trust Company and ask for
copies of the progress certificates, the
price at which the geor•nteed bonds
were sold, whether the company in-
teuded to send men to go over the

difficulty over the street which the
C. P. R. opened for the town in plat r

the company to close. The town ex-

the C. P. U. paid for it, which make', a

Deputy Reeve Reid thought that
while the surveyor was at work
he should be asked to survey the
land the C. P. R. hail made nee

cillor Sallows took a lead in a dis-

of the hylaw granting the bonus

the town were being lived rap to. or
whether in the statement submitted
some time ago by the C. P. H. there
were not included expenditures for
Innd in Goderich which could not be
described as "right of way." Coun-
cillor Craigia volunteered the informa-
tion that the Tate town pollcitor bad
beaked into the matter and had satis-
fied himself that ever the amount
voted has: Leen spent in right of way.
The metier, however, was referred to
the finance committee.
The finance committee brought in a
report recommending that the town

THE ATTIC INSTINCT,
Why Sornr Persons Cling to Things
That Are Rubbish.
The attic r tinct hangs on curpns-

how many years a person has lived in
the city by merely glancing under

anything from a broken lock to old

fare bundles of magazines' and piles of
newspapers, not to mention a bicycle
seat and a green umbrella that one
might use in private theatrieals-if
all these thing' have been placed un-•
tier the bed -against the protest of
the family, if they are patiently mov-
ed every cleaning day and clung to
through\$ moving, then thea owners
have the attic instinct o *etch an ex-
tent that , there is not the elighteet
hope of 'their ever being 'lured. They '
will think Isom an attic point of view
for the rest of their lives, and their
family might as well become resigned.
When people are willing to make
themselves disagreeable over a bit of
string and absolutely objeceionable

brown paper thry should not be ac-

should they be suspected of doing it
