PORT ALBERT.
Misuay. March ht h.
ELK 'rite ItAILWAY. -- A targe
amount of work was done last fall on
the electric railway. before the rough
weather set in, in the way of grading
and preparing the roadbed for the
line sling the Ashfleld'n short. from
Kintail to this village. The right of
way, ten feet in width, has been pur-
chased from ;the property -holders on
the east side of the road, and the
fences and all obstructions have leen
removed farther back. so that now
the road for a considerable distaoce is
ready for the ballasting and the
steepen. During the winter season
the concrete abutments at Graham's
bridge haus been built and are' now
ready fur the steel superstructure.
The large bridge over the Nine
Mile River near Port Albert will be a
work of ronsiderable extent and will
be the most expensive undertaking
that the company will have tut face tin
this part of the line. The cement
abutments were started last fall and
were raised to about flftaen feet be.
fore the rough weather put a stop to
the work. When the work is re-
sumed these abutments will be con-
tinued to the height of forty feet, aa
supporta for the atevl bridge that will
seen the river. A large amount of
tilling in has to be done on both aides
of the river by means of dumpcare on
trestle work, the Atlee for which have
leen brought from Dungannon and
1'olhorne. The work of erecting the
long trestles is to - he started im-
mediately. Following the road frnw
the Port to Goderich the line will take
a sharp curve near the boundary be-
tween the townships of Asbneld and
Colborne, at the Doherty farm, and
after fallowing the boundary road for
about one-half mile will tern again
eolith at Shepperdtnn to Dunlop, near
the C. P. It. tine. There will he very
few houses or other buildings to re-
movP in the whole distant e, which
will materially reduce the cast of the
right of way. There are many
. small watercoaraos yet t o b
bridged, but the work is coni
naretivt•ly light and will be done
mostly by plowing -large cement piping
under the roadway. On the river
flats workmen have been employe'
for some time casting the concrete
piping for the diffetent culverts and
now have a large number of all r -zea
ready for the commencement of work.
So far the company has shown
mm'h energy. In pushing nn the
work, and it looks now as if the
road wouldbe completed by the
tune specified, or at any rate at will
Ito ready in good time to receive the
power from the Maitland dam as soon
as that big work is completed.
