HALLOWE'EN.
Saturday evening will be Hallowe'en
or All Hallow Even, preceding All
Sainte' Day, and the boye and girls
will have the run of the town. It tr
to be hoped that they will have the
largest possible auwuut of 'termites
fun with a 'tiiuitnum of wean or an-
noying pra^tires.
Of late years the old cussoms sacred
tot Hallowe'en seem to be dying out.

they should segk their enjoyment on
the street*? We hope that the toys
and girls of our town will have eo
much fun at home that the streets
will cease to to attractive.
In "Ouriueitier of Popular Cus-
toms," W. S. Walsh given a fine se.
count of the origin of Halloween and
relates many of the intereeting cus-
toms in connection with its celebra-
tion which have been at one time or
another in yogue in different coun-
tries. We cull the following from hie
account :
"Hallowe'en is a curious recru-
deecence of classic mythology, Druidic
beliefs, and Christian superstitions. On
November 1st the Romans bad a feast
to 'Pomona the goddess of fruits and
seals, and 11 was then that the stored
laid up in the summer fur use in the
winter were opened. Hence the
appropriateness of the use of nute and
apples at this time. November Lets

autumn festival to the san,',which the
Druids celebrated in thenkagiving for
their harvest. Now, the Druids be-
lieved in transmigration, and taught
that, on the -eve-- of thtt, festival;
Soman, the Lord of Death, called to-
gether the wicked pouts that within
the Isrt twelve months had been cun-
detuned to occupy the bodies of ani-
mals.
"Fires were also used at different
times and placer ou All Saints' Night.
which is the eve of All Souls Lay,
and on All Souls' Day, the 2nd of
Aovember. in them -eases fires were-
regarded
ereregarded as typical; of immortality.
"Everybody is familiar with Burns'
famous pent, "Hallowe'en," which
gives a panoramic insight into the
atoms of Ohl Scotia on this night of
u th and mystery. Perhaps no in-
tim ea has done more than this to
p ve and spread these observances
English- speaking folk. All of

THE GOVE- RNMENT
AND ZAM-BUK
Special Council (Meeting.
A special meetingof the Au coun-
cil was held on Tuesday eveniug to
cousider a letter from the town
solicitor with reference to the suit of
Mur Sangster against the town for
daufages. The solicitor pointed out
that lie would have to the his state -
went of defence in a few days if the
town intended to defend the suit, as
apparenely the intention of the plain-
tiff was to go ahead with the action at
the Assizes. Thei purpose of the
letter reewed.tu bo to give the council
the opportunity of making a small
offer. without prejudice, if it felt bat
would be better than incurring cost[,
wbicb the town might hmve to pay
even supposing it should winthe suit,
Councilor Johnston was in favor of
making no offer. Ile said the solicitor
had advised that there WAS a good de-
fence to the action and his own opinion
was the same. The chief objection to
making any offer of settlement was
that it created a precedent. Coun-
cillor Humber seconded a motion by
Councillor Johnston to make no offer,
and it wail carried uneuiwotlaly.
Reeve McLean and Councillor Cralgie
were absent at the time of the vote,
but the latter carne in later. Another
Matter which was brought up was the
resolution passed by the water and
light commission some time ago.
calling upon the count:il to "state
their reasons, if such are known to
them," for deciding to submit a bylaw
to the people on the question of the
abolition of the commission. When
the request was read, CouneillorJohn-

oratory stood up for the dignity of
the council and moved to tell the

a more pacific answer, but Councillor
Johnston interrupted witb, "Are Lou

lines was moved by Councillor (,allow

The
Happy Thought
Range
The perfect rebuke of careful culinery clforts, the true delights
of fine cooking. are known only to the ones of
HAPPY THOUGT RANGES.
The fire box is the life of the range, the
oven is the heart.
Don't you think they should be proper -
tinned in size the one to the other? The Wm.
Buck Stove Co. do, and have made a differ-
ent sized fire box for each different sized oven.
If the fire box is ton large for the oven the
-reknit is a waste of--fitei ; if too- small, ineffic-
iency. No other maker seems to know this,
or if he does, he do.-sn't care. The fire box in
each size of the "Happy Thought" is scientific-
ally proportioned to the size of the oven, it is
so in each variety of the range. This is im-
