match did not start until atter the
Emelt Fusiliers had got to their tents,
as their march from the station
proved the greater attraction. The
match was refereed by P. B. Gibbings

I'?+day evening last. The event took

a large number of interested specie -

A little after 7 p. rel.' the launch

There were four ekes, viz„ for single

tested and the results were aN follows :

Time— 5:30.
The race judges were Rev. Dr. Man-

J. F. Badu was the 'starter R'. E •
Kelly timekeeper.
. After the races an +!!nand 1 pro-
cession of canoes, gaily arat.ed
with Bow and pennants, pa down
the river in tow of the Ian , while
Lockets, colored tires and music
mingled to make a truly delightful
pageant. The scene as the procession
gracefully passed before the line of
spectators was a beautiful one, and
the sightseers could not but wLh that
such events could be held regularly
every season.
At the mouth Of the river the mein -
here of the Club and their friends
gathered around a large bonfire,
where refreshments were served, more
fireworks were sent off, and a social
time Wan spent until what had leen a
most enjoyable evening was brought
to* close.
Altogether the first regatta of the
Mrne•aetung Canoe Club was is great
sneers end an occasion of pleasure
both to the members of the Club and
to the large gathering of spectators,
and we trust it will prove to be hut
the beginning of a greater interest in
the water sports which heretofore
have Iwen much neglected in Goderich.
A member of the club states that if
the matter had been more seriously
considered the regatta would have been
held in the harbor instead of in the
river, so that it could have been more
readily witnessed by spectators.
Next year he thinks it will take place
in the harbor, where it will he more
convenient for those who wish to sew
it from the land.
