A ap eci:.1 meeting of the council was held last evening to receive a propoei• tion trona the Maitland River Power Co. The Mayor was in the chair, but Councillors Blair, }iIliutt and Gold- thorpe were the only other na'iiibet on hand. There was a good audience of citizens interested in the discussion of the proposition. • Dr. Holmes, president of the Mait- land River Power Co., tidal -eased the council and laid before it what he dr - scribed as the greatest proposition that haul ever thorn submitted to any council of the town of liexlerich. Their scheme for the develop sit of power on Maitland river wits aupS ported by the ngovts of Mr. Roberts and Mr. von Schon, and a further re- port on the scheme had Igen made by Mr. ('lenient, of the Ontario power cotumiasinn, and could be had by the corporation on application to Hon. Adam Heck, chairman of the c Sion.. It was shown that ata cost of a little less than $1IJ),tss) '2,Aif) horse- power for twenty-four• hours a day could be developed. The px capital cost per hoatwower would not he greater than the capital cost of t Niagara power at Hamilton e r Tor- onto; r o• onto; to the extent of the capacity of the power at the Black Hole the Mait- land Power Co. could deliver power as cheaply as it could to obtained at any place in Western Ontario, and the amount of power could be increased with further expenditure. The Doc- tor spoke of the immense pox -stabilities of this power for Or., town of Gode- rich, meaning the turning of a good \\ many wheels and the running of as • that many f Wtorims.- t Is Asked of the Town. e Company asked the town to qua ntee its lands for $1511,000 at 41 per r i t. As the fine . uderwritera :night require that the p nt eerier plutt should be retained and steam Iw kept up constantly to provide against emergencies. the Company won d pro- vide all the fuel required for thi pm, Pose, in return for the condition hat the Compae ny might have the usof i the town's steam 'plant to sit llenient its own plant in any ow water season or any emer- gency. The Company would *1- 10 desire to have its sub -station Ifor the distribution of pewee* near the town power house, so that they might be worked together to some extent. These would be mutually advantt- Kemp arrangements. Ur. Holmes concluded by proposing that the council should refer the platter fo the town solicitor and the Company's solicitor for the drafting of a bylaw and agreement for pres- entation to the council at * 14uhee (went tweeting. It should. he pro- vided in the bylaw that the agree- tnent could not he altet•trl at any time without vote of the people. J. A. R ball, J. A. Mclnturh, R. 1S. Williams, A. Saunders and J. H. Colborne also spoke, tanphaslsiug the importance to the town of cheap power. ,. l'ounclllor4llair expat'used the opin- ion that the vital question war whether tike war a rife proposition or not.
