LIBERAL VICTORIES
T.mpl.m.n's the Groatost in the
History of Victoria. B. C. '
ONLY A SMALL VOTE POLLED
People Leaked en Contest as a Fore-
gone Conclusion -Tho New Minister

Endorsed by the Capital City of
British Columbia - Two Other
Liberal Vieteries Elcewhore.
Victoria, B. C., March 7. -The vote
yesterday afternoon was: -Temp ran
(Liberal), 1,553; Marcor (Socialist),
306; Beckwith (Conservative), 857.
This gives Mr. Templeman about 700
plurality, the largest Liberal majority
.ever given in the history of the city.
Voting for the bye -election passed
of quietly yesterday. About 2,600 votes
were cast. The remelt was taken as a
foregone conclusion, hence the vote
*was not heavy.
Liberals Rejoice.
The Liberal committee -rooms were
the Centre of a jubilant throng of
HON. MR. TEMPLEMAN.
voters last night, being attended by a
great, Cheering crowd, which was by
no means limited to Liberals, there be-
lng a largenumber of prominent Con-
servatives, who supported Mr. Tern-
pleman throughout. For the first time
lathe history of the city the Liberals,
ranged up solidly behind the candidate,
were augmented by the business men
of the community, irrespective of
party. Towards the last the campaign
became very fierce, engineered largely
by Chief Commissioner Greet) of the
Local Government, who was anxious
to wipe out a score with Mr. Temple -
man's paper, The Times, owing to its
aggressive attitude towards him on
the Kalen Island •matter.
Features of the Campaign.
Mr. Templeman held few meetings,
just sumclent to acquaint the electors
with the issues, but contended through-
out that the Government was not on
trial, as the result couidd not effect the
fate of the Laurier Ad`thtnistratlon, and
that It was merely a question whether
the west was prepared to reject the
proffered portfolio. He, bad the aasist-
ancp of nearly all the Federal Liberal
members at different times, and of his
staunch friend, Ralph Smith, through-
out the campaign. Mr. Smith left for
Ottawa last night, and the new Minis-
ter will follow in a few days.
The Opposition Attacks.
The campaign, so far ai the Oppoel.
tion was concerned, was remarkable
for the virulence shown by the Beck-
with speakers, who turned the disaster
to the Valencia into a campaign Issue,
fiercely attacking the Government for
alleged neglect to provide aids to
navigation and lifeboat appliances.
Captain Woolley, poet -pugilist, also
made much of the alleged "looking to
Washington" on the part of the Liber-
als. and quoted Sir Wilfrid Laurier as
anti-British and disloyal.
A Great Procession.
The election wound up with a torch-
light procession, In which Mr. Temple-
man, accompanied by Messrs, J. A.
Macdonald, leader of the Opposition:
Ralph Smith and John' Oliver, were
drawn through the streets In carriages
by enthuslaaue supporters. Behind
them came a long procession of car-
riages filled with workers, while the
whole was preceded by a band and a
brigade of torchbearers. A stop was
made in front of The Times office, and
finally at the committee room, where
the candidate was loudly cheered In
nrknowledging the support of his hear.
